ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 326 Continuing E d u cation — V III Academic librarians seeking continuing profes sional education have many options from which to choose: formal course work in a degree or non degree program at an academic institution, par ticipation in professional association conferences, attendance at institutes and workshops or indi vidually designed self-study programs. Academic lib r a r ia n s in New M e x ic o now hav e a n o th e r ch oice, the Jo b E nrich m en t Continuing Educa tion Program o f the New Mexico Library Associa tion. O n e year ago, in an attem pt to support co n tinuing education for experienced librarians, the 6 0 0 -m e m b e r New M ex ico L ib ra ry A ssociatio n (N M LA ) funded a Jo b E n ric h m e n t C ontinu in g Education Program. It is a program designed to help librarians update their skills and broaden their exp e rien ce by working in ano ther library within the state or region. T he individual librar ian designs a work experience at another institu tion that will b e of value to o n eself at that par ticu lar point in one’ s c a re e r and will en han ce o n e ’s p r o fe s s io n a l s k ills . No e x c h a n g e w ith an o th e r librarian is req u ire d sin ce this is d e signed as an enrichm ent rather than an exchange program. T h e association awards $200 grants to help d e fray travel and living expenses to librarians who m eet the following guidelines: 1. T he librarian must have a minimum o f three years o f experience in a professional position in a New Mexico library and b e a m em ber of NMLA. 2. T h e librarian must submit a description of on e’s present position and of the proposed enrichm ent position and a statem ent of the o b je c tiv e s o f the e n ric h m e n t e x p e rie n c e , tog ether with a requ est for financial assis tance. 3. T h e librarian must arrange the jo b enrich m ent position for a period o f not less than ten working days and must submit written com m itm ent from the host library to pro vide the enrichm ent opportunity. 4. T he librarian’s em ployer must approve pro fessional leave with pay for the period o f the enrichm ent program. (This is an important criteria.) 5. T h e lib r a r ia n is e x p e c te d to su b m it an evaluation rep ort to the em p loyer and to the NM LA Library Education C om m ittee at the conclusion o f the program. In the first year of the program two o f the first grants w ere awarded to academ ic librarians. A referen ce librarian whose new assignment in spe cial collections included administration o f the li brary’s map co llection spent two weeks in the map departm ent of a large university library in a neighboring state, working with their nationally recognized departm ent head. A science bibliog rapher spent ten days at the technical library of a national laboratory updating her knowledge in the field o f technical report literatu re, working with referen ce staff who manage and service a techn i cal report collection num bering in the hundreds o f thousands. Academic librarians are benefiting by continu ing their education in a practical way, suited to their individual goals and ob jectives. Employers are using the program to com plem ent their own staff developm ent programs, and host librarians are finding the teaching experience a stimulating one. By providing the financial support, the New M exico L ib ra ry A ssociation b e lie v e s it is c o n tributing in a small but important way to the con tinued developm ent o f the professional resources in th e s ta te and to th e lib ra r y p ro fe ssio n in g en era l.— S a n d ra S.
