ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries C&RL News ■ Septem ber 1998 / 609 P r e s e r v a t i o n N e w s Jane Hedberg Rutgers offers preservation institute The Professional Development Studies pro­ gram o f the School o f Communication, Infor­ mation and Library Studies at Rutgers Univer­ sity is offering a three-session Preservation Management Institute as a continuing educa­ tion opportunity. Participants will attend 13 days of classes during one year. Sessions will b e held November 16-20, 1998, April 14-16, 1999, and September 27-O ctober 1, 1999, in East B runswick, New Jersey. Between sessions, participants will develop preservation man­ agement and disaster plans specifically de­ signed for the institutions where they work. CCAHA publishes brochure on salvage o f photographs The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) has published Disaster Re­ covery: Salvaging Photograph Collections by Debra Hess Norris, director o f the Winterthur/ University o f Delaware Program in Art Con­ servation. This six-page brochure details re­ covery options, special considerations and salvage priorities, initial steps before salvage begins, and recommendations for air drying or freezing photographs that have suffered water damage. There is also a chart indicating which salvage method is appropriate for each o f the 24 different photographic processes. Al­ though primarily devoted to the salvage of photographs damaged by water, it also men­ tions damage from smoke and soot. ALCTS publishes audio preservation bibliography The Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) o f the Association for Library Collec­ tions and Technical Services (ALCTS) o f the ALA has published Audio Preservation: A Se­ lective Annotated Bibliography an d B rief Sum­ mary o f Current Practices. This bibliography covers general works, media and formats, stor­ age and handling, disaster response, reformat­ ting and re-recording, technical studies, and bibliographies for all types of audio media. NEDCC fa ll program schedule The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is offering three of its popular pro­ grams again this fall. “Preserving Diversity Through Photographs” will be held October 7 at the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence (fee $30). “Reformatting for Preservation in a Digital World: To Film or To Scan” will be held October 27-29 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (fee $250). “School for Scanning: Is­ sues of Preservation and Access for Paper-Based Collections” will be held December 7 -9 at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre in New Orleans (early registration fee $255).
