T he papers provide docu m en tatio n on m id-19th century railro ad o p er­ ation, especially d u rin g th e Civil W a r. T hey in ­ clude T w ichell’s business diaries an d notes, corre­ sp o n d e n c e , re c e ip ts, led g ers, d eed s, c o n tra c ts , lithographs, flyers, railro ad passes, schedules, p a t­ ents, and pam phlets. ♦ B randeis U niversity, W a lth a m , M assachu- setts, has acquired a 4,600-volum e collection of Shakespeariana ow ned by Professor T. W . B aldw in of th e U niversity of Illinois. T he collection contains over tw o h u n d re d 18th an d 19th century editions as w ell as h undreds of secondary works from th e 19th an d 20th centuries. ♦ Case W estern Reserve U niversity L ib ra ry , C leveland, has been given a collection of 250 a u to ­ graphed letters an d docum ents acquired by a Case W estern alum nus. T he m aterial consists of letters an d docum ents in th e hands of British royalty, poli­ ticians, statesm en, w riters, and composers. O f p a r ­ ticu lar interest are examples from all th e first Lords o f th e T r e a s u r y fro m S ta n le y G o d o lp h in (1645-1712) on, and all th e Prim e Ministers from R obert W alpole to M argaret T hatcher. ♦ T he College of St. C ath erin e, Saint Paul, Min- nesota, has obtained th e personal papers of Ade Be­ th u n e , nationally know n liturgical artist and head of B eth u n e-D u tra Associates, a liturgical consult­ ing a n d a rc h ite c tu ra l firm in N e w p o rt, R hode la n d . T he collection includes letters, prints, sketch books, w ood engravings, and photographs cover­ ing her w ork from th e 1940s to th e present. ♦ E m ory University, A tlan ta, G eorgia, has re- ceived th e papers of th e late R abbi Jacob M . Roths­ child, of A tlanta. R abbi Rothschild w as an active su p p o rte r of th e C ivil R ights m o v em en t in th e South d u rin g his controversial career a t th e Benev­ olent H ebrew C ongregation, b etter know n as the T em ple, w hich was bom bed in 1958. Included am ong these early works is a first edition of B iringucci’s D e la piro- technia (Venice, 1540), several 16th an d 17th cen­ tu ry editions of th e works of G eorg Agricola, and oth er books d atin g from 1495 to 1789. ♦ New York Public L ib rary has received a col- lection of lite ra ry a n d m usical m a te ria ls of th e A m erican com poser an d concert pianist, Louis M o­ reau G ottschalk (1829-1869). T he collection was recently discovered in a tru n k belonging to a direct descendant of G ottschalk, Lily B. G lover, of As­ b u ry Park. H ighlights of th e acquisition are over 130 letters in G ottschalk’s h a n d and original diary m aterials, long th o u g h t to be lost. Also included are holograph an d p rin ted m usic, scrapbooks con­ ta in in g concert reviews, caricatures, an d d eath no­ tices. ♦ Rice University, H ouston, has opened th e Ju- lian S. Huxley C ollection in th e W oodson Research C e n te r, F o n d re n L ib ra ry . J u lia n H u x le y (1887-1975), th e b ro th er of Aldous Huxley, was th e first biology professor at Rice University and la te r b e c a m e d ire c to r of th e L o n d o n Zoo a n d director-general of Unesco. ♦ S o u th w e s te r n U n iv e r s ity , G e o r g e to w n , Texas, has acquired a rare, early Texas docum ent, “A Plan for th e B etter A dm inistration of Justice in T exas,” p rin te d in M onclova, Mexico, April 17, 1834. C o n tain in g 140 articles p rin ted in parallel colum ns of English an d Spanish, th e docum ent es­ tablished th e right of tria l by ju ry an d m ay be the only law of th e M exican state of C o a h u ila an d Texas to ap p ear in its original form in both la n ­ guages. ♦ T he University of D elaw are, N ew ark, has ac- q u ired th e papers of th e Black A m erican poet Paul L aurence D u n b a r (1872-1906) an d his w ife, Alice M oore D u n b a r Nelson. H u n d red s of letters b e ­ tw een th e tw o chronicle in detail th eir relationship an d cover th e period 1895-1904 w hen D u n b a r rose from obscurity to n atio n al fam e. Also included in th e collection are a n u m b er of books from D u n b a r’s personal lib rary , extensive correspondence of Alice D u n b a r Nelson th ro u g h th e year 1930 th a t describe her active role in th e w o m en ’s suffrage m ovem ent, photographs, typescripts, clippings, an d journals. M a y 1984 / 261 • The University of M ichigan, Ann A rbor, has acquired the m anuscript and book collections of m icrographics pioneer V ernon D ale T ate. The col­ lection, w hich takes up approxim ately 230 linear feet, covers the history of m icrographics and re­ lated subjects such as photoduplication, p hotogra­ phy, and inform ation storage and retrieval. In ­ c lu d e d in th e g ift a re T a t e ’s p e rs o n a l a n d professional papers, and records of the N ational M icrofilm A ssociation w h ich T a te co llected as NMA executive secretary and archivist. The collec­ tion chronicles T ate’s career in m icrophotography from his years at the L ibrary of Congress, the N a­ tional Archives, as director of libraries at M IT, and as lib rarian and archivist for the U.S. Naval Acad­ emy. • T he University of W yom ing L ibrary, L ara- m ie, has received th e 1789 Kehl edition of the works of V oltaire in 72 volumes. Published under the direction of Beaum archais, it forms the first posthum ous edition of the com plete works and is the basis for all subsequent editions. This p a rtic u ­ lar set was once ow ned by the Am erican geologist Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) as well as Civil W ar G eneral Regis de T robriand. W yom ing has also obtained the library of Profes­ sor W illiam B. H u n te r J r ., an in te rn a tio n a lly know n M ilton scholar.
