As so much is going on both w ithin the College L ib r a r y Se ctio n and th e A ssociation g e n erally w hich w ill be o f interest to college librarians, let m e report briefly on some o f these activities: College L ib ra ry Standards. At A LA M idw inter the A C R L Ad H oc C om m ittee to review certain portions o f the 1975 standards organized and be­ gan its work. Chaired by Ja ck ie Morris (Associate D irecto r, University of the P a cific, Stockton, CA 9 5 2 1 1 ), the C om m ittee will give special attention to the quantitative aspects of the 1975 Standards. L ib ra ry Statistics. W h ile not an exclusively col­ lege lib ra ry -fo cu se d a c tiv ity , th e w ork o f th e A C R L T ask F o rce on L ib rary Statistics could be an im portant activity for college librarians. W ith the dearth o f current academ ic library statistics, col­ lege librarians will welcom e some organized effort to collect and disseminate statistics on college li­ brary operations. T h e Task F o rce is chaired by G e o rg e B a ile y (C la r e m o n t C o lle g e L ib r a r ie s , C larem on t, CA 91 7 1 1 ). N on-Print M edia Survey. In Jan u ary the College L ib ra ry Section’s Ad H oc C om m ittee on Non-Print M edia and the C ollege L ib ra ry distributed a ques­ tionnaire to five hundred colleges. This survey is in­ tended to provide a basis for describing the present rela tio n sh ip b etw een n o n -p rin t m ed ia and l i ­ braries in small academ ic institutions. Based on the conditions identified by the questionnaire results the C om m ittee w ill explore w hat actions the Sec­ tion and the Association m ight take in the develop­ m ent o f standards, addressing the special needs and problem s o f college libraries, and recom m end pro­ grams and activities on non-print m edia. T h e chair o f the C om m ittee, B. Anne C om m erton (D irector o f L ib raries, SUNY, Oswego, NY 13 1 2 0 ), expects the results o f the questionnaire to be available in tim e for discussion by the C om m ittee at the Los Angeles C onference. L ib raries in Closing Colleges. As a result of a rec­ om mendation from the Im p act o f N ational Policy and N ational L ib rary Developments on the C o l­ ege L ib ra ry C om m ittee the College Section will pp oin t an Ad H oc C o m m ittee on L ib ra ries in losing Colleges. T h e C om m ittee w ill be charged o: “identify the severity o f the college closing p rob­ em in the next decade and i f a significant problem s identified then the C om m ittee would continue to xplore and suggest ways th at the C ollege L ib rary ection could assist libraries in this problem includ­ ng the form ulation o f a checklist to assist in closing lib ra ry .” T h e chair and m em bership of the com ­ l a C t l i e S i a m ittee will be appointed in tim e for an organiza­ tional m eeting a t ALA this summer. C L IP Notes. T h e C L IP (College L ib ra ry In fo r­ m ation Packet) Notes C om m ittee reported to the Executive C om m ittee th at their work on a package o f m aterial on online bibliographic search services in college libraries is continuing. A questionnaire has been developed and was circulated in D ecem ­ ber. O n ce th e m ateria l has been assem bled the C L IP Notes package, which is modeled after the Association o f Research Libraries S P E C Kits, will be sold through the A C R L office. Presently C L IP Notes packages on P erform ance A ppraisal, C ollec­ tion D evelopm ent and Jo b Descriptions are avail­ able. These are available from A C R L headquar­ ters in C hicago (consult C &R L N ews, February 1982, for prices and inform ation on how to order). T h e C om m ittee is ready to work on additional subjects and would like to hear from college lib ra ri­ ans about subjects for which they would like sam ­ ple docum ents, and com p arative data on how col­ lege libraries deal with com m on services, issues or problem s. T h e chair o f the C om m ittee is P. Grady M orein, L ib ra ry D irecto r, University o f Evans­ ville, Evansville, IN 47702. Executive C om m ittee. T h e Executive C om m it­ tee of the C ollege Section discussed a num ber of items o f business at its M idw inter meetings in addi­ tion to th e com m ittee activities itemized above. T h e most notew orthy w ere 1) the concept of a price index for books useful to college librarians, and 2) interest in a m echanism for greater m em bership in­ teraction about the problem s o f college libraries during A LA conferences. T h e idea o f developing a p rice index for books w hich is useful to college li­ brarians was brought to our attention by the work o f the L ib ra ry M aterials Price Index C om m ittee of the Resources Section of Resources and T echn ical Services D ivision. A recom m endation to use books reviewed by C h o ice m agazine as the basis for the index has been proposed by a m em ber of th a t C om ­ m ittee. M embers of the Section who have a con­ cern about such a price index and how it m ight be calculated are urged to w rite to R ichard W erking, D irecto r o f L ib raries, T rin ity University, San An­ tonio, T X 78284. T h e E xecutive C om m ittee w ill explore ways the Section can fa cilitate discussion am ong the Sec­ tion’s m em bership during ALA conferences. One suggestion is to devote a portion of the Section’s program tim e to small group discussions on topics o f current concern. ALA Annual C onference. Looking forw ard to Los Angeles, the C ollege Section in addition to the regular meetings o f the Section’s com m ittees will have tw o meetings especially for the m em bership. T h e first will be an open meeting/hearing by the C ontinuing Ed ucation C om m ittee.
