The award is given to the author o f the best paper published each year in the division’s official journal, Library Resources and T echn ical Services (LRTS). Atkin son received the award for “T he Acquisi­ tions Librarian as Change Agent in the Transi­ tion to the Electronic Library” in vol. 36, no. 1 (1992) o f LRTS. Atkinson began his career as a participant in the NEH/CLR-funded Scholar-Li brarian Program at Northwestern University. Prior to his current position he w orked as hu­ manities bibliographer at Northwestern Univer­ sity and assistant university librarian for collec­ tion developm ent at the University o f Iow a and Cornell University. Jo A. Cates, head o f the Transportation Library at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, has been named to Who’s Who o f American Women 1992/93. She has distinguished herself as a journalist, librarian, and consultant. Cates founded the library at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has been active in news/media librarianship for many years. She has published many ar­ ticles, numerous b o o k reviews, and authored Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature (1990), named “Best Reference B o o k ” by Li­ brary Journal in 1991. Sally Siew -Siew Chuah, w h o earned her MS degree in library and information science from the University o f Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has been selected by the Smithsonian Institu­ tion Libraries for the post-graduate residency in library and information science. During the o n e-yea r resid en cy, fu n d ed b y the James Smithson Society, Chuah w ill rotate through the four divisions o f the libraries. The program is designed to offer the resident a diverse pro­ gram o f practical w ork experience in a research library, training appropriate for a begin ning professional, and exposure to bibliograph ic resources in the W ashing­ ton, D.C., area. M ary E. Jackson, head o f the Interlibrary Loan Depart­ m ent o f the University o f Pennsylvania Library, w ill serve as a visiting program officer with the Association o f Research Libraries (ARL) through the end o f 1993- In that position she w ill w ork with the ARL Committee on Access to Inform ation Re­ sources to develop strategies for im proving interlibrary loan and document delivery activities. Jackson is a nationally rec­ ognized speaker, author, consultant, and w ork­ shop leader. She wrote, with Shirley K. Baker, Maximizing Access, Minimizing Cost: A First Step Toward the Information Access Future. Jam es N eal, dean o f the Indiana University Library system, has been chosen Outstanding Librarian o f 1993 by the Indiana Library Fed­ eration. H e received the recognition on May 7 at the federation’s conference in Indianapolis. The award is given in recognition o f innova­ tive leadership in the d evelopm en t and im­ provement o f library service or for distinguished service to the profession. Neal has been an in­ vited speaker to the International Library Fed­ eration Association m eeting in India; involved in planning cooperative efforts with libraries in M oscow and other east European locations; and chair o f the Indiana delegation to the White House Conference on Library and Information Services. A n n L. O kerson, director o f the O ffice o f Sci­ entific and Academ ic Publishing o f the Asso­ ciation o f Research Libraries, is the 1993 recipi­ ent o f the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) B lackw ell North America Scholarship Award. The award, a cita­ tion to the w inner and $2,000 to the library school o f the w inner’s choice, is given to the author o f an outstanding monograph, published article, or original paper on acquisitions, col­ lection developm ent, or areas o f resources d e­ velopm en t in libraries. O kerson received the award for “With Feathers: Effects o f Copyright and Ownership on Scholarly Publishing” (College 414 & Research Libraries, vol. 52, no. 5, 1991). Okerson attended San Francisco State Univer­ sity and Pacific Union College and received a B.A. in English and German; she received her master’s degree in library science from the University o f California, Berkeley. She has designated the University o f Michigan School o f Library and Information Science for the $2,000 scholarship. Susan E. Tulis, documents librarian at the Uni­ versity o f Virginia law library, is the winner o f the 1993 Documents to the People Award o f the ALA’s Government Documents Round Table (G ODORT) and its joint sponsor, Congressional Information Service, Inc. On leave this year to the American Association o f Law Libraries as its assistant Washington affairs representative, Tulis is a member o f the Depository Library Council, a former chair o f GODORT, and a fre­ quent speaker, author, and editor. The award carries a $2,000 stipend that Tulis has chosen to use to support, through GODORT, a broad discussion o f the future o f the Depository Li­ brary Program. Prentice, associate vice-president for information resources at the University o f South Florida, has been appointed dean o f the Col­ lege o f Library and In­ formation Services, Uni­ versity o f M aryland, C o lle g e Park. From 1978-1988 P ren tice served as professor and director o f the Gradu­ ate School o f Library and Inform ation Sci­ ence, University o f Ten­ nessee, Knoxville. She has also taught at the Ann E. Prentice State University o f New York at Albany and at Pratt Institute in Brook­ lyn, N ew York. Prentice holds an A.B. degree in political science from the University o f Roch­ ester, an MLS from the State University o f N ew York at Albany, and a D.L.S. from Columbia University. She was also awarded an honorary doctor o f letters by Keuka College, Keuka Park, N ew York. She was president o f the American Society for Information Science in 1992 and has been a member o f the Board o f Directors since 1985. In ALA she was a member o f the Council in 1979-1983 and has chaired the Baber Award Committee, the Professional Ethics Committee, and numerous other committees and juries. D eath s M ary Elizabeth G reen A n n a, former librar­ ian at the University o f Maryland, C ollege Park, died on May 14 at the age o f 80. Y v o n n e E. Greear, former assistant university librarian for public services at the University o f Texas at El Paso (U TEP), died April 11 fo llo w ­ ing an extended illness. Greear received her B.F.A. in radio broadcasting in 1948 and her MLS in 1962 from the University o f Texas at Austin. She w o rk ed for 30 years at UTEP, b e­ ginning as secretary to the librarian. She left the college for seven years to w ork in special libraries, then returned in 1964 as a reference librarian. She w as later prom oted to head o f reference services, a position she held until 1971 w h en she was named assistant director for pub­ lic services.
