Let there be light Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsyl vania, has found a different way to throw light on the subject in its new Harry C. Trexler Library. The designers wanted to use a single system to light both the stacks and the study carrels, in a setting complicated by many soffits, step-downs, and ducts. Engineers at Hubbell Lighting suggested using the familiar Value System 800, a direct/indirect, school/drafting room luminaire, but with the fixtures running perpendicular to the stacks, rather than parallel to them. Paul Becker o f Wallace and Watson Associates o f Allentown, who designed the in stallation, says that "the spines on the books on the lowest level o f the stacks can be read, and with the lights run at right angles to the stacks, the bookshelves can be relocated without hav ing to reposition the lighting.” Patricia Ann Sacks, director o f libraries at Muhlenberg, is enthusiastic. “This lighting does meet all our criteria,” she says. “You aren’t aware o f the light source because there are no glaring reflections o ff paper or the computer screens.” Actual light levels in the finished jo b measure 75 footcandles on the study carrels. Energy usage runs at an efficient 1.2 watts per foot. M a r g a r e t J . Through GOVD O C, O C LC produces monthly O C LC M ARC tapes or catalog cards for items distributed through the federal de pository program. Libraries use a customized order form to indicate which item numbers they want and whether they want tapes, cards, or both. For member and nonmember librar ies, O C LC also will attach their OC LC institu tion symbol to the record in the database. In the 10 months since the cataloging service was introduced, 130 federal depository libraries have signed up for it.
