A m an has resigned from his position as d ean of th e School o f Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee (UWM) after 22 years of service. He will continue to work in SOIS as senior professor. Aman was the dean of the Palmer Graduate School o f Library and Informa­ tion Science at Long Is­ land University (1976- 79) an d director o f the Division of Library and Information Science at St. John’s University (1976- M o h a m m e d M . A m a n 79) before joining UWM. During his tenure at SOIS, the school has grown to nearly 500 students an d 23 faculty and staff, has gro w n in national an d international stat­ ure, a n d has o b ta in e d m illions o f dollars in grants an d contracts from local, national, and international funding organizations. Aman has published m ore than 12 books and nearly 100 articles a n d technical reports, his m ost recent publications being G ulf War in World Litera­ ture, 1990-2000a nd T¡oe Use o f the Internet in Libraries a n d Information Centers. He has also received many awards, including the Award of A ppreciation from th e Trejo Foster F o u n d a ­ tio n (2001) a n d th e W isconsin Librarian of the Year (1998) aw ard from the Wisconsin Li­ brary Association. B ra d ley Baker, d e a n o f libraries an d learn ­ ing resources at N ortheastern Illinois Univer­ sity, has b een nam ed the 2002 recipient of the H ugh C. A tkinson M em orial D em co Award. T he aw ard w as created by the Illinois Library Association to recognize an d encourage state­ w id e reso u rce sharing an d m ultitype library cooperation. C an dace Benefi e l, senior hum anities refer­ e n c e lib rarian at T exas A&M U niversity Li­ braries, has received the Distinguished Achieve­ m ent A w ard in L ibrarianship from th e A sso­ ciation o f F orm er Students. J u d ith Bird, m em ber o f the State University o f New York-Farmingdale staff since 1968, has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Ex­ cellence in Librarianship. Bird was cited for her acquisitions and collection m anagem ent in the school library. She has w orked w ith the Long Is­ land Resources Council to develop and coordi­ nate acquisitions and share resources with other Long Island, New York, libraries, and she has suc­ cessfully lobbied for additional funding for SUNY libraries. W illiam J. C row e, Spencer Librarian at the University of Kansas (KU), has been nam ed the first recipient of the Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Library Award. Crowe joined KU as dean of libraries in 1990, was named vice chan­ cellor for information services in 1996, and served in both capacities until 1999 w h en he w as ap­ pointed Spencer Librarian. He also serves as chair­ m an o f the board o f trustees for OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. Crowe has been a m em ber o f ALA since 1971 and has chaired or been a mem ber of various committees in ACRL, the Library Administration and Management As­ sociation, and the Association for Library Collec­ tions and Technical Services. Larry H ardesty, library director at Austin Col­ lege in Sherman, Texas, has been named a distin­ guished alum ni o f the University o f Nebraska- Kearney (UNK). Hardesty earned a master’s de­ gree in history from UNK in 1971. He was presi­ dent o f ACRL (1999-2000), w as nam ed ACRL Academic Research Librarian of the Year (2001), an d is serving as chair of the 2003 ACRL Na­ tional Conference. M aureen Pastine, Temple University librarian, has received a Fort Hays State University (FHSU) Alumni Achievement Award.
