S h a r r o w assumed the position o f associate d irecto r for p u blic services at the University o f Washington, Seattle, on January 1, 1978. Sharrow holds a B .S . and an M .A .L .S . from the U niversity of M ichigan and is p re s­ e n tly c o m p le tin g a M .P .A . at the U niver­ sity o f Washington. She has held p o sitio n s in several, libraries, includ­ ing the D etro it Public Library, Syracuse U ni­ v ersity L ib ra rie s , and was d ir e c to r o f th e Roseville Public Library in Michigan from 1973 M arilyn J . S h a rro w to 1975. Sharrow has been active in a variety o f organi­ zations and has serv ed on nu m erou s lib rary committees. Currently her membership in ALA includes the A CRL and LAD divisions. She is a member o f the Resources Sharing Committee of the Washington Library Network and has been a regular reviewer for L ib r a r y J o u r n a l for the past five years. HAROLD L. E s p o is the new program officer at the ACRL Headquarters. Before taking up his position with A C R L on May 1, E sp o was an In stru c tio n / R e fe re n c e L ib r a r ia n in th e U ris Undergraduate Library at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Espo began his library career at Earlham C ol­ lege as a reference librarian with a strong focus on bibliographic instru ctio n. H e then becam e head librarian at the D reiser Library, a part of the Indiana University Halls o f Residence Librar­ ies, and also spent time as the head librarian of the Living Learning C en te r at Indiana Univer­ sity. From Indiana he returned to Earlham C ol­ lege as assistant to the librarian during the period of time in which the librarian, Evan F arber, pur­ sued work under a Council o f Library Resources grant. A regular contribu tor to the “ Periodicals for College Libraries” column in C H O IC E , he has also been involved in a nu m b er o f workshops dealing with bibliographic instruction. Richard W. Couper, president o f the New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foun­ dations, is pleased to announce the appointment of D a v i d H . ST AM to the position o f Andrew W. Mellon D irecto r o f the research libraries. The new director will assume his office in the summer of 1978. Stam will have full responsibility for the New York Public Library’s twenty-two research libraries and special research collections. Stam has b e e n lib r a r ia n o f th e M ilto n S. Eisenhower Library, the library o f the Arts and Sciences Division o f Johns Hopkins University, since 1973, where he also served as chairman o f the University L ibrary C ouncil. From 1967 to 1973, Stam served on the staff of the Newberry Library, Chicago, as head of Technical Services until 1969, and as associate librarian thereafter. Prior to his service at the Newberry Library, he was librarian o f M arlb oro C o lle g e , M arlboro, Vermont, where he also taught. From 1959 to 1964, Stam served in several capacities at the New York Public Library, among these as assistant editor of library publications, and in the library’s B erg Collection o f English and American Literature. It was at this time that he assisted Elton F. Henley in the preparation of W o r d sw o r th ia n C r itic is m 1 9 4 5 -1 9 5 9 , published by the library. H e was the author with Elton Henley of a revised edition in 1965 and compiled the successive volume, W o rd sw o r th ia n C riticism 1964-1974 (NYPL, 1974). Stam is a m ember o f several scholarly and pro­ fessional organizations and has written and edited a number o f articles for scholarly and academic journals. H e is the recent author o f “After the Ball is H ik ed : C r e a tiv ity and C o n fo rm ity in Academic Library Organization,” to be published in the P ro ceed in g s o f th e S eco n d A n n u al L ib ra r y M an ag em en t C o n fe r e n c e , Indiana State Univer­ sity. Stam is currently completing his doctorate in English history at Northwestern University and has studied at Wheaton College, the City Univer­ sity of New York, and Rutgers University Gradu­ ate School o f Library Science, from which he re­ ceived his M .L .S . degree in 1962. The appointment of An n e W OODSW ORTH as director o f libraries at York University has been announced by Bertrand Gerstein, chairman of the university’s board o f governors. The appointment is effective April 1, 1978. Woodsworth, currently personnel librarian at the Toronto Public Library, will replace William Newman, who has been acting director o f librar­ ies since July 1976. In her new position at York University, she will be responsible for a system of five libraries (including the Osgoode Hall Law School Library, the Steacie Science Library, and Glendon C o llege’s Leslie Frost Library) with a collection o f over a million volumes and a staff 148 complement o f 220, including 41 librarians. A professional librarian for the past thirteen years, Woodsworth brings to her position at York University a wealth of experience in general li­ brary administration with expertise in such areas as bu dget and fiscal m anagem ent, p erson nel management, collection organization and process­ ing, and measurement and evaluation. Woodsworth is a graduate o f fine arts from the University o f Manitoba (1962). She received her B .L .S . d egree (1964) and h e r M .L .S . d egree (1969) from the University of Toronto. Her career as a librarian commenced in 1964 as faculty librarian for the faculty of education at the U n iv ersity o f M an ito b a. S in c e th e n sh e has served as re fe re n c e librarian and librarian in charge of three branches of the Winnipeg Public Library (1965-67); reference librarian in the Sci­ ence and M edicine D epartm ent, University of Toronto Library (1967-68); medical librarian, To­ ronto W estern Hospital (1969-70); administrative assistant to the ch ief librarian and then head of the Reference Department, University o f Toronto Library (1970-74); information systems consultant for th e U n iv e rsity o f T oro nto M ed ia C e n tre (1974); project officer in research and planning for the Ontario Educational Communications Author­ ity (1974-75); and personnel librarian for the To­ ronto Public Library from 1975 to the present. In addition, Woodsworth has directed Informa­ tion Consultants, a private company she estab­ lished in 1974, that specializes in research and in­ formation needs; retrieval systems; and surveys for federal and provincial governments, libraries, business, and industry.
