The Center for R esearch Lib raries ha b ee n aw arded a grant from the National En d ow m ent for the Humanities on behalf o f th South Asia Microform Project for $220,660 an an additional $39,175 contingent u p o n receip o f matching funds. The grant will be used fo microfilming and cataloging significant earl 20th-century Indian m onographs in Marathi Gujarati, Sindhi, Konkani, and English, the majo languages o f w estern India. T e x a s Tech U n iversity 's Sou th w est C o l lection has received a grant o f $105,760 fro an anonym ous do n o r to provide for the care p reserv atio n , a n d availability o f th e Fran Reeves P h otograph Collection an d Exhibits photos and new s clippings that docum ent th West Texas ranching industry from the 1920 to the 1970s. The collection contains 16,00 printed photographs, 50,000 unprocessed neg tives, and several boxes o f new s clippings. Culpeper Foundation to establish a b ook pres­ ervation facility and m odel training program for the W orcester Area Cooperating Libraries. Participating libraries include the Colleges of Worcester Consortium Inc., the Worcester Public Library, the W orcester Art Museum, and the W orcester Foundation for Experimental Biol­ ogy. The U n ive rsity of M an ito b a L ib ra rie s recently received a grant o f $12,744 from the Adaptive Technology for Libraries Program of the National Library o f Canada. With matching funds, the university has b ee n able to acquire an optical character recognition scanner and three workstations to provide voice and large- print access to the libraries’ online catalog. V irg in ia C o m m o n w e alth U n iv e rsity 's (VCU) T om pkins-M cC aw Library has b e e n aw arded a two-year grant o f $290,000 from the National Library o f Medicine to m ake available a Drug Information Automated Library through­ out the Medical College o f Virginia (MCV) Cam­ pus of VCU. The drug information resource will consist o f MICROMEDEX, commercially avail­ able databases, and information developed by the MCV Hospital Drug Information Center. May 1995/351 Robert Smith B enjam in Speller The survey will be directed by Robert Smith, AAEA project director at Wayne State, and Ben­ jamin Speller, dean o f North Carolina Central University’s School of Library and Information Science. The survey will result in a description of HCBU archives and special collections. A c q u is it io n s Microfilmed copies of documents relat­ ing to the actions of the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War are being acquired by Brandeis University working in cooperation with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. The documents, w hich are located in the Russian Center for the Preservation and Study of Mod­ ern History in Moscow, w ere shipped to Mos­ cow in 1939 by the military heads of the Inter­ national Brigade to prevent their capture by Franco’s advancing forces. They range from military orders of the day to private correspon­ dence and shed light not only on the role played by Americans but that of other foreign volun­ teers in supporting the Spanish Republic. The collection of the Horatio A lger So­ ciety has been acquired by the University Li­ braries o f Northern Illinois University. The So­ ciety is comprised of dedicated collectors of the works o f the immensely popular Horatio Alger Jr. (1832-1899), w ho published more than 100 works of fiction which sold in excess of 200 million copies. M ore than tw o million items relating to gay and lesbian people, their history and culture, from the archives o f the ONE Institute will b e housed at the University of Southern California Libraries, Los Angeles. The collec­ tion includes books, periodicals, pamphlets, photographs, posters, slides, films and video­ tapes, clothing, and other artifacts. There are also historical docum ents and artifacts from the w om en’s suffrage and early gay rights move­ ments, as well as materials about gay and les­ bian politicians, writers, artists, musicians, sci­ entists, and other international figures who were prominent in the days w hen society was far less accepting of lesbians and gays. The W illiam J. G au g h an Collection has been acquired by the University of Pittsburgh for its Archives of Industrial Society. The col­ lection contains an extensive assortm ent of docum ents, photographs, films, architectural drawings, and maps chronicling decades of o p ­ eration at U.S. Steel’s Homestead Works. It in­ cludes more than 22,000 photographic prints and negatives taken of the Homestead plant, its workers, and the w orkers’ activities in the communities surrounding the plant. Company publications, reports, and internal memos, much of which deals with personnel issues, shed light on em ployment practices and the workplace culture of both workers and managers. The U n iv e rsity of W a te rlo o L ib ra ry , Ontario, has received the archives o f the Cana­ dian Coalition on Acid Rain, which played a central role in raising awareness on the acid rain issue and in the passage o f the U.S. Clean Air Act in 1990. Included in the collection is a broad variety of documents such as memoranda, letters, research studies, and polls from gov­ ernm ent agencies, elected officials, public in­ terest groups, and scientific institutions in both the U.S. and Canada.
