D avid , head librarian at the Uni­ versity of the Philippines College o f Science in Manila, has been awarded the UMI Library Tech­ nology Award recognizing librarians w ho have m ade significant contributions in developing innovative information systems and services that directly benefit patrons. David is the first li­ brarian outside of the U.S. to receive this award. She is also coordinator for the Department of Science and Technology Engineering and Sci­ ence Education project for networking academic libraries. O ne o f her major achievements in­ volved automating eight public and private li­ braries. Part o f that effort included obtaining funds from UNESCO to construct a fiber optic data netw ork that linked tw o college libraries across campus. J a c q u e lin e D o n a ld s o n D o y le , director of con­ tinuing m edical ed u catio n an d learning re­ sources at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix, has b een elected president­ elect o f the Medical Library Association (MLA) for 1997-98. An active m em ber in MLA, Doyle chaired the 1996 MLA National Program Com­ mittee, the Continuing Education Committee, and the Task Force on the Role o f the Librarian in Information Management. The aw ard recognizes out­ standing publications in librarianship and the arts each year. Freeman received a State Uni­ versity of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 1993- J e n n if e r O ttervik , head of the Music Library at the University o f South Carolina, Columbia, has b een nam ed w inner of the 1997 Walter Gerboth Award by the Music Library Associa­ tion. The aw ard is given annually to a music librarian in the first five years of his or her ca­ reer w ho is engaged in research likely to lead to publication. Ottervik’s research topic, “The Use of Jazz in O pera,” will result in the pro­ duction o f a bibliography o f operas that use jazz elements. T h o m a s W. R o o k s, dean o f libraries at the Uni­ versity of Houston, has b een nam ed Librarian J u ly /A u g u s t 1 9 9 7 / 5 0 7 of the Year by the Texas Library Association (TLA). Rooks was honored for her “contribu­ tions to the library profession statewide, espe­ cially her w ork prom oting and directing the TexShare academic library consortium .” TLA also praised Rooks’s strong leadership quali­ ties, her willingness to m entor other librarians, and her wealth of know ledge about libraries and librarianship. A ppointm ents K aren H a c k le m a n D a h le n has been nam ed director o f the Health Sciences Libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She most re­ cently w orked at the University of Illinois at Chicago w here she held a joint appointm ent in medical education and health information man­ agement, and actively participated in several grant projects. Before that she served an in­ ternship at the Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University and a leadership appren­ ticeship at Vanderbilt University Medical Cen­ ter. M arian n e I. G au n t has been appointed uni­ versity librarian at Rutgers University. She had served as acting univer­ sity librarian since Feb­ ruary 1996. Before that, Gaunt served in a num ­ ber of capacities at Rut­ gers including associate university librarian for r e s e a r c h a n d u n d e r ­ graduate services, online services coordinator, cir­ culation librarian, and di­ rector of Alexander Li­ Marianne I. Gaunt brary. A m em ber o f the ACRL 8th National Conference Executive Com­ mittee, G aunt currently serves on the govern­ ing board of the Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities, a joint program of Rutgers and- Princeton Universities. M o h a m m e d A. S. K h an has been nam ed head librarian/librarian specialist at South Florida State Hospital Medical Library in Pem broke Pines. Khan has w orked as a library consultant for California Technical University and the U.S. Department of Public Health Services in New York. He also w orked as head librarian o f the En­ gineering Research Li­ brary at the Automobile Club of Southern Califor­ nia; senior information specialist at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Re­ search; lecturer/librarian at th e King A bdulaziz U n iv ersity in J e d d a h , Saudi Arabia; and expert Mohammed Khan librarian at the University of Sulaimaniyah in Iraq. A mem ber o f several professional organi­ zations including ALA, Khan is currently pur­ suing his Ph.D. in information systems from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. C liffo rd A. L yn ch , director of library autom a­ tion at the University of California (UC) Office of the President, has b een appointed execu­ tive director of the Coalition for N etworked In­ formation (CNI). Lynch has been at UC since 1979, and is internationally know n for his de­ velopment of Melvyl, an information system that serves all the UC campuses. He has played a key role in developing information standards, especially Z39-50, w hich addresses the need for interoperability am ong information retrieval systems. Lynch has served on the Board of Di­ rectors of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and currently is a mem ­ ber o f NISO’s Standards D evelopment Commit­ tee. Immediate past-president o f the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) and a fellow of the American Association for the Ad­ vancem ent o f Science, Lynch has received sev­ eral aw ard s including ALA’s LITA/Gaylord Award, an ASIS Dissertation Award, and the American Society for Engineering Education’s Homer Bernhardt Award. J a n e t M artin W elch , director of the Roches­ ter Regional Library Council for the past 20 years, has been nam ed assistant commissioner for libraries and state librarian by the New York State Board o f Regents. Welch has professional experience in school, public, academic, and cor­ porate libraries. Dur­ ing h er tenure, Holtz led the expansion o f the libraries’ outreach services in reference an d in both basic and continuing education support for hospital an d health science libraries across the state. O n a national level, she w as active in the Association o f Academic H ealth Science J u ly /A u g u s t 1 9 9 7 / 509 Remembering Anita Lowry (1950-1996) and Paul Evan Peters (1948-1996) A n ita L ow ry, head of th e U niversity o f Iow a (UI) Libraries In fo rm a­ tion, Research, and Instructional Services De­ partm ent since 1995, died in July following heart surgery. She was 46. Lowry joined the UI staff in 1993 as head o f the newly o pened Information Arcade. Before that she w orked at Columbia University as deputy head of the Butler Library Reference Department, and was founding director of Columbia’s electronic text service. Sheila Creth, UI’s university librar­ ian, said, “We will continue to benefit from Anita’s many professional accomplishments. Those w ho know her and enjoyed her … quick wit and good hum or have lost a friend as well as a valued colleague.’’ (September 1996) P a u l E van P eters, founding director of th e C oalition for N etw orked Inform ation (CNI), died on N ovember 18 while walking with his wife on a beach in Florida. He was 48. Peters founded CNI and served as its head since March 1990. Before that he served as systems coordinator at the New York Public Library from 1987 to 1989; assistant univer­ sity librarian for sys­ tems at Columbia Uni­ v e rs ity ; a n d as a principal in a variety of research and develop­ m ent projects at the L Iniversity o f P itts ­ burgh. A former mem­ ber o f the ALA Coun­ cil, P ete rs w as also Paul Evan Peters fo rm e r p re s id e n t o f ALA’s Library and Information Technology As­ sociation, and former chair of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). CNI Steering Committee chair Richard West said, “We do not yet com prehend how much Paul will be missed. His leadership, insight, and quiet com petence have had an impact on all w ho have benefited from the CNI pro­ gram.” (January 1997) Library Directors and the Medical Library Asso­ ciation (MLA) and was nam ed an MLA Janet Doe lecturer. In 1993 the Wisconsin Health Sci­ ence Library Association nam ed her Librarian of the Year. D o r o th y K an ter, collection access librarian at the University o f W isconsin-M adison Health Sciences Libraries, will retire this sum m er after 32 years o f service. Kanter began w ork at the libraries as a project assistant w hile still in library school, then quickly m oved into posi­ tions o f responsibility in acquisitions and seri­ als. She participated in the m ove to com puter­ ized journal records and to com puter programs tracking journal usage. P h y llis K a u ffm a n , history o f m edicine librar­ ian at th e University o f W isconsin-M adison (UW) Health Sciences Libraries, will retire this summer. Kauffman began working at UW in 1982 and served in cataloging, interlibrary loan, and reference. During h er hu sb an d ’s sabbati­ cal, she w orked in a Dutch medical libraiy. She took responsibility for the History o f Medicine Collection in 1991. G eo rg e M itch ell, libraries developm ent officer at the University o f North Texas in Denton, retired in March after more than 28 years of service. C o r in n e J. P otter, director o f the library at St. Ambrose University in D avenport, Iowa, retired at the en d of June after 20 years o f service. Potter spearheaded the m ove for construction of the new library building, w hich o p en ed in March 1996.
