Speakers a n d audiences alike displayed grow ­ ing conviction that, with satisfactory on-line sys­ tem s not possible by January 1980 a n d w ith im ­ plem entation sources such as O C L C and LC in­ sufficiently p re p a re d to cope by th at date, th e re may well b e increasingly vocal proposals to delay im p le m e n ta tio n , d e s p ite in te rn a tio n a l im p lic a ­ tions, and to push back “D ay 1” u ntil it can be approached with considerably m ore confidence. F re ed m an , faculty m em b e r of C o­ lu m b ia U n iv e rsity ’s School o f L ib rary Service, began on a positive n ote, em phasizing th at th e flexibility allow ed by a m a c h in e -re a d a b le data base w hen co upled w ith a system of autom ated a u th o rity c o n tro l a n d in e x p e n siv e , sw iftly p ro ­ du ced co m p u ter-o u tp u t m icroforms (COM ) can, if used im aginatively, open new m eans o f access to inform ation for library users. F rom th e sam e data b ase, full IS B D catalogs can b e p r o d u c e d for netw orks o r re se a rc h lib ra ries, w hile p u b lic li­ b raries can b e p rovided w ith sim plified form ats, m ore analytics, an d m odified subject headings. C atalogs th a t in te g ra te n o n p rin t m ate ria ls and even com m unity inform ation (a new MARC for­ mat?) b ecom e viable alternatives. John K napp, R esearch L ib raries G ro u p , also challenged th e au dience to use m achine-readable data bases to break out of unit-card strictu res into m ore flexible display m odes. Interw eaving prag­ m atic e x p e rie n c e w ith visio n ary goals, h e d is­ cussed significant aspects of th re e altern ativ es to th e card catalog: book, C O M , and on-line. Photocom posed book catalogs d em onstrably in­ crease ease of look-up b u t freq u e n tly suffer from updating problem s. T h ere will always b e distaste fo r a n y sy s te m r e q u i r i n g u s e rs to m a k e tw o searches, b u t absolute cu rre n cy is m ore of a myth th a n a re a lity in e x is tin g c a rd catalogs. C O M c a ta lo g s h a v e t h e d i s t i n c t d is a d v a n ta g e o f M onotype form at, using a very re stric te d charac­ te r set, b u t costs are less th an 4 p e rc e n t of th e expense for book catalogs. Q u arterly m asters with w eekly su p p le m e n ts are econom ically feasible. K napp p r e d ic te d th a t th e o n -lin e catalogs o f th e fu tu re will involve m ini-com puter processors r e s tru c tu rin g d a ta for p u b lic se rv ice te rm in a ls. T h e cost for such hardw are will not b e p ro h ib i­ tive, b u t th e unvarying high cost of software is a problem . Public service term inals n e e d only have “ r e a d ” c a p a b ility a n d , th e r e fo r e , can b e o n e- q u a r t e r as e x p e n s iv e as te c h n ic a l s e rv ic e m achines. T he d em an d s on p u b lic service te rm i­ nals will b e different: m ore access points, such as corporate au th o r collocation, keyw ord, a n d Bool­ ea n se a rc h c a p a b ilitie s , w ill b e p o ss ib le , a n d w eek ly u p d a tin g o f th e d a ta file will p ro b a b ly suffice. COM back-up will b e essential in case o f down tim e and to cope w ith peak load periods. In all th re e alte rn a tiv e s, a v ariety o f re g iste r form ats and related indexes are possible. Knapp u rg e d th a t m any a rra n g e m e n ts b e tr ie d , since decisions are not irrev ersib le w hen th e catalog is m achine-produced. H e also n o ted th at w hatever th e form of th e catalog, th e sam e 70 p e rc e n t of cost goes into source m aintenance, precataloging search, and cataloging.
