F u lle r ’s The G e n e r a ls h ip o f A l e x a n d e r t h e Great (1958), Ashley reexam ines all available sources to es­ tablish chronological and geographical prob­ abilities. The Story of Libraries from the Invention of Writing to the Computer Age, by Fred Lerner (246 pages, Novem ber 1998), places the libraiy profession in its various cultural contexts from antiquity to the anarchy o f the Internet. This m odest but wide-ranging his­ tory is filled with incidents, quotations, and a n e c d o t e s th a t c a p tu r e th e e s s e n c e o f librarianship: the Roman philosopher Seneca w ho com plained, “Among cold baths and hot baths a library is also equipped as a necessary ornam ent o f a great h ou se”; without libraries, said the Dutch Jesu it Peter Canisius, “w e are like soldiers w ho march into battle without any w eapons”; and the 13th-century Arab his­ torian Ibn Hayyan said he never bought a book becau se “w hatever b o o k I want to have I can get on loan from any library, while if I wanted to borrow m oney to buy these books I should find n o on e w ho would lend it to m e.” $24.95.
