ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 68 Personnel P R O F I L E S Purdue University has announced the ap pointment of Joseph M. Dagnese as Director, Libraries and Audio Visual Center, effective January 10. He comes to Purdue from the Massachusetts Insti tute of Technology, where he has been As sistant Director of L i braries for Technical Services since 1966. H is e d u c a t i o n a l background includes a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston College, and a mas Jo se p h M. D agn ese ter’s degree in English from Catholic Univer sity. Further work at Catholic University earned him the M .S.L.S. degree in 1952. On this foundation he has built a record which in cludes a wide range of professional activities and experience. Mr. Dagnese joined the M IT libraries in 1960 as head of the acquisitions department. This was followed by the dual responsibility of science librarian and head of the circula tion department. Other libraries have benefited from his pro fessional insights. During 1966 and 1967, Mr. Dagnese was library consultant to the Birla In stitute of Technology and Science, Pilani, In dia, on a Ford Foundation-sponsored program. A six-week visit there in 1966 was followed by a one-year residence in 1967. He is presently an adviser to the program. In 1970 Mr. Dagnese was consultant for the Ford Foundation at Delhi University Library. Mr. Dagnese has been active in the Special L i braries Association, both in the Boston Chap ter and nationally. Other memberships include the American Library Association and National Microfilm Association. Royce Butler, a native Canadian, has re turned to Canada to become Director of L i braries and Professor of Bibliography at the University of Manitoba replacing Mr. David Wilder. Butler brings to Manitoba a wide range of experience gained in American and Canadi an libraries. His background includes positions as head of technical services at the University of Denver, 1962-1965, and associate director of libraries at York University in Toronto during 1965 and 1966 where he played a major role in develop ing the preliminary program for their new central library which opened in the fall of 1971. Before accepting the directorship at Manitoba, Mr. Butler served as university li brarian and later Dean of the Library at Oak land University, Rochester, Michigan from 1966 through 1971. The five years spent at Oakland University added greatly to the experience that he had already gained. He again wrote a building pro gram for a main library and also helped to gain full faculty rank and status for his staff. His contributions to the profession have been as varied as those he has made to his em ployers. He was founding editor of the C olorado A cad em ic L ibrary in 1963, he has published in various library journals, and has been an active participant and leader in state as well as the American and Canadian library associa tions. His credentials as a leader in academic li brarianship should stand him in good stead at the University of Manitoba.
