Beilby, a char­ ter m em ber of SUNYLA, has been a regular partic­ ip an t in chairing sessions and planning program s for annual conferences, served as treasurer from 1985-87, and has been a m em ber of the A utom a­ tion Com m ittee since its inception. Samuel Y. F ustukjian, library director a t the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, was re­ cently elected president of the T am pa Bay chapter of the American University of Beirut’s Alumni As­ sociation for 1989-1991. Fustukjian attended AUB from 1967-1969 as a graduate student and spent 1983 at AUB as director of its medical, engineering and architecture, science and agriculture, farm , and Jaffet undergraduate libraries a t the invitation of AUB president Malcolm Kerr. Months after Fus­ tukjian left Beirut, Kerr was shot and killed; an as­ so ciate, P e te r K ilb o u rn e , w as k id n a p p e d an d killed; and Fustukjian’s tennis partner, Tom Suth­ erland, was kidnapped. The T am pa Bay chapter of the AUB Alumni Association has over 100 m em ­ bers, and the group plans to raise funds and con­ sciousness about AUB and its role in bringing peace to the Middle East. Lester Pourciau, director of libraries and asso­ c ia te vice p re s id e n t fo r a c a d e m ic a ffa irs - adm inistration at Memphis State University, was chosen 1989 L ibrarian of the Year by the Memphis L ibrary Council. The aw ard was presented during the celebration of National L ibrary W eek (April 9-15) and M LC’s 25th anniversary. He is th e first recipient of this aw ard, w hich will become an an­ nual event. She guided th e Technical Services D e p a rtm e n t th ro u g h th re e c a t­ aloging codes, O C L C , a n d D a ta p h a s e in s ta lla ­ tions. D u rin g a 30-year career as d irecto r of li­ braries, M iller oversaw th e b u ild in g of th e L illy L i­ brary an d th e M ain L ib ra ry on th e B loom ington campus, a n d c o o rd in a te d th e lib r a ry system on each of th e eight cam puses. H e re tire d in 1972 an d c o n tin u e d te a c h in g u n til 1973. Schu llian, th e first c u ra to r of th e C ornell U niversity L ib ra ry ’s H istory a n d Science C ollections, died in A pril a fte r a n extended illness. Schullian first w en t to Ith a c a in 1927 w h en , a fter receiving h e r b ach elo r’s degree from W estern Re­ serve U niversity, she w as considering C ornell for g ra d u a te stu d y . C h icag o w as m o re persuasive, h o w ever, a n d Schullian subsequently received her P h .D . in L a tin from th e U niversity of C hicago in 1931. A fter th re e years as a F ellow of th e A m erican A cadem y in R om e, she ta u g h t an cien t languages for five years a t Albion College. In 1944 she re ­ tu rn e d to C leveland a n d b eg an an 18-year associa­ tio n w ith th e N atio n al L ib ra ry of M edicine, b egin­ n in g as a n a s s is ta n t c u r a t o r a n d e v e n t u a l l y becom ing chief of th e H istory of M edicine D ivi­ sion.
