This nearly 150-page paper­ back covers classification and nomenclature, the nature o f conidium (the cell or cells that begin a fungal life cycle and the main unit o f dispersal), germination and vegetative growth, infestation and its effects on heritage objects, collection recovery, monitoring air quality and surface contamination, and prevention. It also includes a glossary and extensive bibliography. P hotograph preservation The School o f Image Arts at Ryerson Univer­ sity in Toronto and the George Eastman House International Museum o f Photography and Film in Rochester, N ew York, are collaborat­ ing on a new master o f arts program in photo­ graphic preservation and collections manage­ ment. Beginning in the fall o f 2003, this two-year course o f study will combine academic study and practical experience. Students will spend the first year at Ryerson, six weeks during the summer interning in a photograph collection, and the sec­ ond year at Eastman House. The curriculum will emphasize the historical, social, and cultural uses o f photography, as well as, materials, processes, curatorial practices, and preservation procedures. Degrees will be granted by Ryerson and tu­ ition will be $18,000 CAN per year. RLG-JISC sym po sium The Research Libraries Group (RLG) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) o f the United Kingdom are cosponsoring an international digital preservation symposium to be held at the Library o f Congress in Wash­ ington, D.C. on March 24-25, 2003. The day- and-a-half symposium, Selection and Collabo­ ration in Digital Preservation, is designed to foster interorganizational and international cooperation for digital preservation. Speakers include N eil Beagrie o f JISC, Mark Roosa o f LC, Reg Carr o f the University o f Oxford, Clifford Lynch o f the Coalition for Networked Information, and a number o f other practitio­ ners from Europe and the United States.
