Mark your calendars for the 27th Annual

T hese two days are significant to aca

venue for librarians to m eet with their c o n

how their actions and policy decisions af

occurring in our libraries due to evolving
information technology, w e must keep our
representatives inform ed and educated o f

tion Transactions Act (UCITA), and 3 ) the
Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
Later in the day you m ay caucus with your
state delegation.

O n Tuesday, you will jo in your state
delegation and visit your congressional rep
re s e n ta tiv e s , d eliv erin g y o u r m essa g es

may want to arrive in D.C. on Sunday to
b e ready for the full day o f activities on
Monday.

ALA has set aside a b lo ck o f room s at

With the rapid growth o f databases, the
number of licenses handled by libraries
has grown exponentially. This change in
scale means that it is even more important
to have in place sound practices for track
ing licenses, as well as policies and proce
dures that encourage or enforce compli
ance with the terms of the contract.

During the one-day preconference,
“Navigating the Licensing Landscape,” ex
plore core issues to address in license
negotiation, discuss selected problems
and solutions in licensing language, and

examine current hot issues. Learn negotia
tion techniques, share negotiation strategies,
and discover if the current licensing model
is sustainable as libraries attempt to man
age an ever-increasing number o f licenses
and contracts. This preconference will be
held prior to the ALA Annual Conference
in San Francisco, on Friday, Ju n e 15, 2001.
Speakers include Ivy Anderson, coordina
tor for Digital Acquisitions, Office o f Infor
mation Systems, Harvard University Library,
and Kimberly Parker, Electronic Publishing
and Collections specialist, Yale University.
