ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 332 /C&RL News ■ March 2001 G r a n t s a n d A c q u i s i t i o n s Ann-Christe Young C o rn e ll U n iv e rsity has re ce iv e d a one-year grant o f $799,085 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a pro posed architecture for a new online library for science education. The award is part o f a $13-5 million NSF initiative to create a Na tional Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL). NSF is targeting the fall o f 2002 for launch of a com pleted NSDL library system. The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has been awarded $15 million by the American Legacy Foundation to estab lish perm anent Internet access to 40 million pages o f once-secret to b acco industry docu ments and to develop a center for scholarly study o f the material. Most o f the documents have b e e n obtained through litigation led by state attorneys general. The new online docum ents library is considered critical to continued research in this field since the to b a c co industry can rem ove existing docu ments from the Internet in 2010 under the terms o f the 1998 Master Settlem ent Agree ment betw een the industry and 46 state at torneys general. Legacy is the national foun dation created in March 1999 as a result o f th e to b a c c o s e ttle m e n t a g re em e n t. T h e library’s current T o b acco Control Archives can be found at http://www.library.ucsf.edu/ tobacco/. A p r il 1 d e a d lin e f o r m u se u m - lib r a r y g r a n t The Institute o f Museum and Library Ser vices will award grants to support projects that demonstrate how museums and li braries can work together to expand their services to the public. Either the museum or the library may be the lead applicant and may apply for up to $500,000. Appli cations are due April 1, 2001. For more information, visit http://www.imls.gov/ grants/museum/ m us_nlgm. asp . The Golda Meir Library at the University o f W isconsin, M ilwaukee, has received a $2,000 grant from the Theod ore and Anna Grollman Fund. T he gift will enable the li brary to provide im m ediate preservation treatment for the most fragile Germ an-lan guage items in the American Geographical Society Collection. T hese materials date from the late 1800s through the early part o f the 20th century. They cover topics such as car tography and geology; pre-World War I his tory; geology, geography, and ethnography o f Germ an regions, cities, and colonies; g e ography and ethnography o f Middle Europe at the turn o f the 20th century; and German folk , custom s, and costum e history. The highly acidic content o f the paper on which these materials w ere originally printed has caused significant deterioration. R o w an U n iv e rs ity has re ce iv e d a $2.5 m illion gift from K eith and Shirley Campbell family o f Salem County, New Je r sey, to fund an endow m ent for the library and establish a professorial chair in the Col lege o f Business. Both gifts w ere given to the university in the form o f stock. Keith Campbell is the chairm an o f the board o f trustees at Rowan University. For a portion o f time, the funds from this endow m ent and the expected state match will b e used to help purchase a hom e for the president o f the university and augment the library budget. O nce the house is paid for, it is expected that an endow m ent o f at least $1.5 million will b e available to support the library in perpetuity. A c q u i s i t i o n s Robert James Waller Jr., author of The Bridges o f M adison County, named his alma mater Indiana University as the recipient of an estate gift with an estimated value well into the sev en -figu re range.
