G allagh er has received the New England Archivists’ (NEA) D istinguished Ser­ vice Award. G allagher has served as director o f research collections at the University of Vermont (UVM) since 1992. Previously he served as h ead o f special collections, univer­ sity archivist, an d curator of m anuscripts at UVM. H e also served as staff archivist for U.S. Senators R obert Stafford an d Patrick J. Leahy (1988-89). G allagher is the author o f num er­ ous publications, including “A R epository Archivist on Capitol Hill” an d “Problem s of a Collection D evelopm ent Archivist.” H e was h o n o red by m em bership in national libraiy science an d history h o n o r societies, as a fel­ low of the Vermont A cadem y o f Arts an d Sciences, an d by UVM w ith a Faculty Devel­ opm ent Award. R e t i r e m e n t s Bonita B ryant, assistant director o f collec­ tion development, has retired from the Uni­ versity Libraries at the University at Albany, after 20 years o f service. She began her li­ brary career in 1967 as a library assistant at the Sandia Corporation T echnical Libraries in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She joined the University at Albany Libraries in 1981 as an associate librarian and achieved tenure and the rank o f librarian shortly thereafter. Dur­ ing her tenure as assistant director, she was responsible for a successful reorganization o f the Libraries’ Collection D evelopm ent Di­ vision, as well as the guidance and leader­ ship o f bibliographers in the selection o f elec­ tronic resources. She provided the necessary leadership for the developm ent o f the Librar­ ies’ Preservation Program. Pam ela J . Cravey, most recently head o f ac­ cess services at Georgia State University’s Pullen Library, has retired after 32 years o f service to four university libraries. Awarded emerita status, she has started a consulting business and has written Protecting Library Staff, Users, Collections, an d Facilities (Neal­ Schuman, forthcom ing). Carol Parke has retired from the Syracuse University Library after serving 14 years as associate university librarian for public ser­ vices. She also w orked in libraries at the Uni­ versity o f Delaware, where she was an assis­ tant director, and at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was head o f reference and interim director. Parke’s first academic library position was at Yale, w here she was a reference librarian, and later, head o f gov­ ernment publications. Betw een 1977 and 1984 Parke was also a visiting lecturer at the School o f Library Science, University o f North Caro­ lina, Chapel Hill. A life m em ber o f ALA, Parke was active in the ACRL heads o f public/reader’s services discussion group. She was also active in the Research Libraries Group Shared Resources Program. Lois Sher has retired after 20 years o f ser­ vice to the Engineering Library at the Stanford University Library (SUL). She began working as head o f circulation in 1980 and was pro­ moted to operations manager, w here she re­ sponsible for the day-to-day operation o f the library in addition to assisting with reference services. Sher served on many SUL commit­ tees including NOTIS Circulation Im plem en­ tation, president o f SULSA (now SLSA), Uni­ corn W orkflows Circulation Planning and Implementation, the Binding Task Force, and numerous search committees. O ne o f Sher’s achievements was the organization and imple­ mentation o f NOTIS C irculation in the E n­ g in eerin g Library. D e a t h s Douglas Birdsall, 53, associate dean o f the University Libraries at Texas Tech, has died. His administrative du­ ties in clu d ed th e r e ­ cently com pleted, 17.5 million dollar renova­ tion o f the university li­ brary. The Tech library was also accredited as a m em ber o f the Asso­ ciation o f Research Li­ braries (ARL) under his leadership. He began Douglas Birdsall his career as an assis­ tant professor at Idaho State University in 1979. He then moved into library adminis­ tration at North Dakota State University in 1984 and to Texas Tech in 1989. He has had articles published in a variety o f library jour­ nals including the Encyclopedia o f Library and Information Science, the Journal o f Aca­ dem ic Librarianship, and College and Re­ search Libraries. He was a m em ber o f the TTU International Affairs Council and the Aca­ demic Council, and had served on the TTU Research Council. ■
