Mellon Foundation grant initiative to explore the creation a nd operation of persistent e-journal archives. Mellon has aw arded seven one-year planning grants to investigate four aspects o f such archiving. IMAP Web site In dependent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP) is a consortium organized in 1999 to ensure preser­ vation o f in d ep e n d en t electronic m edia for cul­ tural a n d educational use. IMAP defines indepen­ d e n t electronic m edia as “time-based, non-com - mercial production incorporating video or audio,” e.g., video art, technology-based installation art, independent docum entary a nd narratives, o r com­ m unity media. T he IMAP W eb site contains infor­ m ation a bout the preservation a n d cataloging of this type of m edia. T hey have d e v eloped a cata­ loging tem plate b ased o n standard MARC cata­ loging fields using a FileMaker Pro database (Win­ do w s or Macintosh). Although designed for use b y those w ith n o library cataloging experience, the tem plate a n d a p ro p o se d u n ion catalog m ay prove helpful to librarians. Building digital collections T he Council on Library a nd Information Resources (CUR) has published three reports exam ining the challenges involved in building coherent digital library collections that com plem ent collections in o ther formats. The first, publication 99, is Selec­ tion and Presentation o f Commercially Available Electronic Resources: Issues and Practices by Timo­ thy D. Jewell. T he second, publication 100, is Building and Sustaining Digital Collections: Mod­ els for Libraries and Museums. The third, publica­ tion 101, is Strategies fo r Building Digitized Col- lections by A bby Smith. T hey cover, respectively, integration o f commercial online publications into existing library collections, business m odels suit­ able for nonprofit organizations that can effec­ tively sustain online collections, a n d “reselection" o r the selection o f collections for digital conver­ sion.
