Betty Gard, head o f reference and research ser­ vices at the University o f North Dakota’s (UND) Chester Fritz Library, was named 2002 Librarian of the Year by the North Dakota Library Associa­ tion (NDLA). Gard has w orked at UND since 1971. She served as NDLA president and has chaired many NDLA sections and committees over three decades. She has also been state representa­ tive to the ALA Council for two terms and re­ mains active on many ALA committees and task forces. Fred M. Heath, dean o f the University Libraries at Texas A&M University, began his one-year term as president o f the Association o f Research Li­ braries. Three new Association o f Research Libraries’ board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Rush Miller, univer­ sity librarian, University o f Pittsburgh; Sherrie Schm idt, dean o f university libraries, Arizona State University; and Paul W illis, dean o f li­ braries, University o f South Carolina. Mary Ja n e Scherdin, director o f the Oscar Rennebohm Library, Edgewood College in Madi­ son, Wisconsin, has been named the 2002 Librar­ ian o f the Year-Demco Award recipient by the Wisconsin Library Association. Scherdin worked in public, school, and academic library settings, including positions at the University o f W is­ co n sin (U W )-W hitew ater, UW -M ilw aukee, and UW-Madison, before being named library d irecto r at Edgew ood College in 1992. She chaired the ACRL Task Force on Vocational Inter­ est Inventories ( 1 9 9 1 - 93), was a member of the ACRL Image Enhance­ ment Committee (1993— 9 6 ), and c h a ir e d the ACRL A p p o in tm e n ts C om m ittee ( 1 9 9 7 -9 8 ) . She has also been active M ary Jane Scherdin in the ACRL College Li­ braries Section’s College Library Director Men­ tor Program. Scherdin’s national study o f the vocational characteristics o f the library and in­ formation profession was funded by ALA, ACRL, and Consulting Psychologists Press, resulting in the book Discovering Libraians: Profiles o fα P rofes­ sion (ACRL, 1994). Jo se p h Periam D anton, 94, professor emeri­ tus and former dean of the school of librarianship at the University of California-Berkeley, has died. After serving with the New York Public Library, the Williams College Library, and ALA (1928— 35), Danton served as librarian and associate pro­ fessor of bibliography at Colby College and Temple University. He moved to Berkeley to become dean o f the school o f librarianship in 1946, where he served as dean until 1961 and retired in 1976. Danton’s numerous publications are cataloged in J . P eria m D an ton : A B ib lio g ra p h y (School of Librarianship, University of California, Berkeley: 1976). Helen H. Lyman, 92, librarian, teacher, scholar, and consultant in adult library services and lit­ eracy, died on November 4, 2002. She had most recently served as an adjunct professor in the li­ brary and infonmation studies program at the Uni- versity at Buffalo (1977-98). Lyman taught a course in adult resources and services yearly until the age of 88. She had previously served as a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin Library School from 1966 until her retirement as professor emeritus in 1977. Her library career be­ gan at the Buffalo Public Library (1932-52), where she served as head o f the Adult Education De­ partment. In 1954, ALA published her seminal study on adult education activities in U.S. librar­ ies, the first research study on this topic. She went on to serve as adult services librarian for the Chi­ cago Public Library, Public Library Consultant in Adult Services for the Wisconsin State Libraiy, and Public Library Specialist in Adult Services for the U.S. Office of Education in Washington, D.C, Among her many honors and recognitions were: University at Buffalo Distinguished Alumni Award; the ALA Joseph W. Lippincott Award for Distinguished Librarianship; and ALA’s Margaret Monroe Library Adult Services Award. Rose M arie Service, 81, education-psychol- ogy subject specialist for 25 years before her retirement in 1986 at the University of Or­ egon (UO) Libraries, died in Eugene, Oregon. She served as reference librarian for six years at Carleton College. Service was known as an innovator and a champion of the rights of stu­ dents and citizens.
