T his d e ­ cision cam e after a g reat d eal o f deb ate , soul searching, an d co n sid eratio n o v er th e b ro ad issues o f race, ethnic diversity, an d w o m e n ’s rights. U tah’s w ell reco g n ized stance against abortion an d its failure to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment were painful reminders that w omen do not have the same rights as men. “This com m ittee w as fo u n d ed o n the prin­ ciples o f equal rights for all p eo p le regardless o f race, ethnicity, gender, o r sexual orienta­ tion; therefore, w e cannot in g o o d conscience p resen t a program in Utah. The com m ittee’s decision w as particularly difficult b ecau se o f its respect for an d appreciation o f th e w ork of Dr. Jo se p h Boissé, ACRL C onference chair. This decision in n o w ay reflects o n his significant efforts o n b ehalf o f ethnic an d cultural diver­ sity, b u t instead speaks to a B oard decision the com m ittee finds inappropriate.
