Sharing their knowledge of textiles, they de­ scribe factors to consider such as construction, fiber, padding, installation, and maintenance. Maybe you’re not ready for a physical change like a new carpet but you are looking for a philosophical change. Rush Miller and Beverly Stearns’s article on quality management offers a practical overview of TQM and how it might be implemented in an academic library (p. 406). Concerned about vandalism in the library? Roland Person and Nelson Ferry share with us Southern Illinois University’s experiment in us­ ing student patrols to cut down on crime in the library (p. 428). Our coverage of networking and the Inter­ net continues in this issue with a list o f English and American literature resources prepared by Loss Glazier (p. 417). And Nancy Nuckles de­ scribes Louisiana’s developing statewide net­ work (p. 414). Danielle Mihram’s conference report, “Forg­ ing partnerships in science education reform,” gives us highlights of the annual Sigma Xi con­ ference (page 432). “The Way I See It” contin­ ues this month with an essay by Bill Whitson suggesting that the future role of libraries will be in the areas o f access, gateways, and assis­ tance (p. 426). ACRL is expanding its electronic communi­ cations to include ACRL-Forum, an open listserv for discussion of issues pertinent to ACRL, aca­ demic librarianship, and higher education.
