ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 444/C&RL News People in the News Pam Spiegel Nicholas Burckel, associate dean for collections and ser­ vices, Washington University Libraries, St. Louis, has been appointed by Governor Mel Carnahan to the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board. He will serve a three- year term ending in 1997. The 12-member board is “the central advisory body for his­ torical records planning and for projects relating to his­ toric records developed and carried out within the state.” In 1988 Burckel served as a consultant to the state under the auspices o f the National His­ torical Publications and records Commission. Jerry D. Campbell, university librarian/vice­ provost for library affairs/vice-provost for com­ puting at Duke University, has been elected to the Council on Library Resources (CLR) Gov­ erning Board for a three-year term. CLR was established to address the problems o f librar­ ies generally and is currently focusing on its four program areas o f human resources, eco­ nomics, infrastructure, and access and process­ ing. Campbell is president-elect o f the Associa­ tion o f Research Libraries and has held offices and memberships in the American Theological Library Association, the Triangle Research Li­ braries Network, and the Research Libraries Group, among others. Sheila Creth, University o f Iowa (U I) librar­ ian, was appointed to the EDUCOM Board o f Trustees for a three-year term beginning last January. Creth also serves as the UI represen­ tative to the National Association o f State Uni­ versities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) Commission on Information Technology. Miriam A. Drake was chosen on the basis o f her pioneering ef­ forts in changing the nature o f information transfer. She is the architect o f Library 2000, an online interactive information system at Geor­ gia Tech which makes it possible for students to de­ fine their own information needs and to develop useful patterns o f access to information. The award, sponsored by Mecklermedia and named in honor o f Allen Kent, distinguished service professor emeritus at UP, carries a $500 honorarium and an in­ scribed Tiffany prism. Mary Dykstra, director o f the School o f Li­ brary and Information Studies, Faculty o f Man­ agement, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been appointed to the Information H ighway Advisory Council o f the Canadian government. Dykstra is the sole appointee from the professional library/information studies community on the 29-member council. Mary Jo Lynch, director o f ALA’s Office for Research since 1978, was recently honored as the Distinguished Alumna o f the Year by the Graduate Alumni o f the School o f Communica­ tion, Information, and Library Studies, Rutgers University. Lynch re­ c e ived a Ph.D. from Rutgers in 1977, an M.A. from the University o f Detroit in 1966, and an MLS from the University o f Michigan in 1962. She was instru­ mental in the development and publication o f the Public Library Association’s planning pro­ cess and output measures manuals, and in the July/August 1994 / 445 nationwide coordination and collection o f pub­ lic library statistical data. Charles R. McClure, professor at the School of Information Studies, Syracuse University, was this year’s recipient o f the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University o f Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies Alumni As­ sociation. McClure was recognized for his ef­ fective and innovative contributions to the li­ brary profession and extensive contributions to the professional literature. As a nationally recognized expert on U.S. government infor­ mation, information resources management, and library management and services, McClure has testified before the House Committee on Space, Science and Technology; the National Commission on Libraries and Information Sci­ ence; and the N ew York State Governor’s Com­ mission on Libraries. He is the author or editor o f 27 books and more than 170 articles. Raleigh Muns, reference librarian at the Tho­ mas Jefferson Library, University o f Missouri- St. Louis, was the winner o f the 1994 OCLC On the Front Line Award presented in May at the National Online Meeting in N ew York City. The annual award, which includes a check for $1,000, honors an outstanding reference librar­ ian w ho makes effective use o f electronic ref­ erence products in his or her daily work; dem­ onstrates k n ow ledge, creativity, and go o d humor; and goes the extra mile for library pa­ trons. In nominating Muns, Sandra Snell, head o f reference services at the Jefferson Library, said, “Raleigh Muns should win the . . . award because he is integrating traditional nuts-and- bolts reference work . . . with creative imple­ mentation o f the latest technologies on a shoe­ string budget.” Felicia Piscitelli, senior cataloger at the Texas A&M University Libraries, has been named the recipient o f the 1994 Walter Gerboth Award by the Music Library Association. The award is given to music librarians in the first five years o f their careers w ho are engaged in research likely to lead to publication. Piscitelli’s project is titled “A Bibliography o f Catholic Hymnals Published in the United States from the Second Vatican Council to the Present (1965-1993).” William Saffady, professor in the School o f Information Science and Policy, State Univer­ sity o f N ew York at Albany, was honored by the Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University in March as its Dis­ tinguished Alumnus o f the Year. Saffady was recognized for his distinguished career as a professor and scholarly writer. In addition to his duties as professor, he also teaches profes­ sional education seminars for various organi­ zations around the country, and serves as an information management consultant providing training and analytical services to corporations, government agencies, and other organizations. The author o f over 30 books and numerous articles, Saffady holds three degrees from Wayne State. Philip Turner, dean o f the School o f Library and Information Studies and assistant vice-chan- cellor for academic affairs at the University o f Alabama (U A), Tuscaloosa, was among seven recipients o f the sixth Awards for Achievement in Managing Information Technology sponsored by the Graduate School o f Industrial Adminis­ tration at Carnegie Mellon University and Ameri­ can Management Systems o f Fairfax, Virginia. Turner, who was honored April 26 in ceremo­ nies at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in N ew York City, was re c o g n ize d fo r d e v e lo p in g the Intercampus Interactive Telecommunications System (UTS), a compressed video network linking the faculties and students at UA-Tusca- loosa with UA-Birmingham and UA-Huntsville. The network has grown steadily and now con­ nects other schools and sites within the state. It also serves a significant portion o f the infor­ mation highway connecting Alabama’s five cen­ ters o f Technical Excellence. Appointments Roland C. Barksdale-Hall has been appointed head librarian at the Pennsylvania State Uni­ versity Shenango Campus Library. Before join­ ing Penn State, Barksdale-Hall was a staff li­ brarian at the Carnegie Public Library in Pittsburgh. His career also includes positions as assistant librarian at Howard University, sci­ ence/engineering reference librarian at Johns H opkins University, and librarian fo r the MAXIMA Corporation. Most recently, Barksdale- Hall launched “People in Search o f Opportu­ nity: The African American Experience in Mer­ cer County,” a project to create a traveling 446/C&RL News exhibit featuring old diaries, photographs, let­ ters, and military papers depicting the black experience in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Michael Homan, assistant university librarian for the sciences at the University o f California, Irvine, has been named director o f the Mayo Medical Libraries in Rochester, Minnesota. Mark Horan, reference librarian at Farleigh Dickinson University (FD U ), has been ap­ pointed head librarian at the Penn State Wilkes- Barre Campus Library. Horan earned an MLS from the University o f Pittsburgh, an M.A. in English literature from Slippery Rock State Col­ lege, and a B.A. in general literature from Syra­ cuse University. Before joining FDU, he worked part-time as a librarian for Manchester Out­ placement Services Inc. in N ew Jersey. Daniel A. Savage was named university librar­ ian at the University o f Prince Edward Island, Canada, in August 1993. He previously served as ch ief librarian at Redeem er C ollege in Ancaster, Ontario. Charlene Baldwin has been appointed head o f the Sciences Libraries Division at the University o f California, Riverside. Marilyn Browning is now reference librar­ ian at the John T. Clarification Elizabeth Smith’s profile in the May is­ sue regarding her appointment as Learning Resources Center/Library dean at Collin County Community College, did not cor­ rectly characterize her change in career from laboratory work to the field o f library sci­ ence. Retirements Jack Key, director o f the Mayo Medical Center Libraries in Rochester, Minnesota, moved to senior faculty status in May and will officially retire in March 1995 after serving 24 years as director. Mary Landeck recently retired as public ser­ vices librarian at the Milwaukee Area Techni­ cal College, Wisconsin. July/August 1994/447 Richard Meerdink recently retired as librar­ ian o f the Milwaukee Area Technical College, Wisconsin. Helene Roberts, curator o f visual collections at the Fine Arts Library, Harvard University, re­ tired in June after 23 years there. Roberts’s con­ tributions to the field o f visual resources have been wide-ranging. She has held positions on the executive boards o f professional associa­ tions and publications, served as editor o f Vi­ sual Resources: An International Journal o Documentation, and produced many scholarly articles and publications. She was recognized by her peers in 1992 with the Distinguished Service Award o f the Visual Resources Associa­ tion. Peter Spyers-Duran will retire as dean o f Uni­ versity Libraries and Library and Information Science at Wayne State University (WSU), De­ troit, late in 1994. Since 1983 Spyers-Duran has been the chief adminis­ trative officer in charge of the University Librar­ ies, the University Press, the Library and Informa­ tion Science Program, and Media Services at WSU. During his tenure, the WSU Libraries ad­ vanced from 78th to Peter Spyers-Duran 43rd in rankings by the Association o f Research Libraries. As founde o f the Detroit Area Library Network in 1984, Spyers-Duran nurtured the growth o f the WSU initiative, which houses 14 million records an has 560,000 registered users. Andrew Tax, medical librarian at Southern Il linois University (SIU), Carbondale, retired i May after 23 years there. Educated at Charle University in Prague, Tax worked as a libraria in that city until the Soviet invasion o f 196 forced him to leave the country. After two year in the Engineering Library at Dartmouth Col lege, Tax joined SIU’s faculty in the Scienc Division in 1971, then became medical librar ian in 1973- In 1991 Charles University awarde Tax his Ph.D. Last year he translated G. Deaths Sheldon Brunswick, the first Near Eastern/ Judaica librarian at the University o f California- Berkeley, died March 10 at the age o f 57. Shirley F. Harper, former director o f the Mar­ tin P. Catherwood Library, School o f Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University, from 1975 to her retirement in 1993, died May 17 at the age o f 67. Harper attended the universities o f Minnesota and Chicago (UC), from which she received an MLS in 1953- Before joining Cornell, she directed the Industrial Relations Center Library (later the A. G. Bush Library) at UC from 1949 to 1975. She co-authored, with Thomas L. Whisler, the book “Performance Appraisal, Research and Practice” (1962). Mary Hilton, retired head o f the Circulation Department at Northwestern University, died at her home on March 24 at the age o f 94. Hilton received her degree in library science from Western Reserve University then joined Northwestern in 1926. She retired in 1968. Raymond B. Means, director o f the Reinert/ Alumni Library at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, died January 7, 1994. Means became director in November 1977. He received his MLS from the University o f Denver in 1961. LaMar R. Smith, education librarian emeritus at the University o f Nevada, Reno (UNR), died March 12 after a lengthy illness. Smith first served at UNR as Reserve Book Room assistant in 1953-54, then as circulation librarian, and then became education librarian in 1964. He retired in 1983. ■ Advertiser index Amer.
