ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries Ja n u a r y 1 9 9 7 / 23 CARL N ew s sub m issio n g u id e lin e s Editorial pu rp o se C ollege & R esearch L ibraries News ( C&RL News) publishes articles written by practitioners ad­ dressing philosophy and techniques o f day-to- day management o f academic library services and collections. C&RL News provides current information relating to issues, activities, and personalities o f the higher education and aca­ demic/research library field. Focus is upon re­ cent developments in user education, technol­ ogy, p rofessional education, preservation, public relations, products, government actions that affect libraries, acquisitions o f special col­ lections, grants to libraries, reports on meet­ ings, and the business o f ACRL. Established in 1966, C&RL News is the offi­ cial news magazine and publication o f record o f the Association o f College and Research Li­ braries (ACRL). It maintains a record of selected actions and policy statements o f the associa­ tion and publishes timely reports on the activi­ ties o f ACRL and its units. It is published 11 times per year. The editor bears full responsibility for the content o f each issue of C&RL News and selects material for publication based on the following criteria. The editor also reserves the right to make appropriate revisions in material selected for pub­ lication in order to standardize style or improve clarity (except official ACRL documents). Note: Formal, theoretical, or research-ori­ ented articles will be forwarded to the editor o f C ollege & R esearch L ibraries for review. Instructions to au th o rs 1. Style. Articles should be practical and written in an informal, accurate, and informa­ tive manner. Manuscripts should be original and not published elsewhere. (Exceptions may be made for items previously published in in­ stitutional newsletters.) Footnotes, charts, and tables should be kept to a minimum. 2. L ength. News notes may be 1 50-350 words; reports of meetings for the “Conference Circuit” should be 750-1,000 words; essays for “The Way I See It” should be 750 words; ar­ ticles should be no more than 2,000 words. 3. C on ten t. Material selected generally falls into one of the following categories: a. Reports on a project, program, or service dealing with a topic relevant to academ ic librarianship (e.g., “Writing Web Page Stan­ dards,” January 1996). b. Reports for “Conference Circuit” that sum­ marize the highlights of a recent conference, workshop, or meeting o f interest to academic or research librarians (e.g., “ALADN 1996: Sa­ voring Stone Soup,” May 1996). c. Essays for “The Way I See It” that offer reasoned and informed speculation or comment on relevant topics (e.g., “Future Catalogers: Es sential Colleagues or Anachronisms?” July/Au gust 1996). d. Essays for “Every Librarian a Leader” that share practical examples o f how librarians can serve in leadership roles (e.g., “There Must Be 50 Ways to Be a Leader,” April 1996). e. Standards, guidelines, or recommenda tions o f an ACRL committee or other official ACRL group (e.g., “Standards for College Li­ braries,” April 1995). f. C&RL News may occasionally print requests for the donation o f books or materials to li­ braries, especially foreign libraries, which have suffered extensive loss through fire, hurricane, or natural disaster. Other libraries soliciting contributions for other reasons will be referred to the rates for classified advertising in C&RL News. 4 . G ra p h ics. W henever possible, photo­ graphs, illustrations, images from Web sites, etc., should accompany article submissions. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use graphic materials. Submit camera-ready artwork for all illustrations. On the back o f each photo­ graph include: a brief caption, credits (if ap­ propriate), and your name, address, phone number, and e-mail. 5 . If the manuscript is prepared on a word pro­ cessor, please supply an electronic version of the manuscript as a text file in an IBM-compat­ ible format, preferably in WordPerfect for Win­ dows 6.0 or ASCII.
