In g les, associate vice-p resid en t o f learning systems at the University of A lb e rta (U A ), h as b e e n named information innova­ tor o f the Year by the Cana­ dian Information Productiv­ ity Awards (CIPA), an annual awards program established in 1992 to honor outstand­ ing m anagem ent a ch iev e­ ment in information technol­ ogy. Ingles was chosen for directing technological inno­ vations that are creating a new model for the dissemination o f informa­ tion by libraries and research and educational institutions. He oversaw the creation o f a sys­ tem for interlibrary loan at UA that automates the ordering and delivery o f documents using the World Wide Web. Ingles was also recently inducted into the CIPA Hall o f Fame. A nne R. K en n ey, associate director o f the De­ partment of Preservation and Conservation at Cornell University, was appointed to the Na­ tional Historical Publications and Records Com­ mission (NHPRC). She was appointed by the Society o f American Archivists, for which she served as president. Kenney has participated in the NHPRC Historical Editing Institute and has reviewed NHPRC grant applications. S usan P h illip s, library director at the Ohio University Lancaster Regional Campus Library, has been presented with the Academic Library As­ s o c i a t i o n o f O h io ’s (ALAO) D istin g uished Service Award, which is presented to a long-time ALAO member who has prom oted academ ic li­ braries and librarianship statew ide and/or p ro­ vided leadership in pro­ motion o f ALAO. Phillips Susan Phillip s played a leading role in getting academic libraries involved in library advocacy. She has served as president of ALAO, and on the executive board in the capacities of public relations chair, ACRL representative, and on the ALAO Government Relations Team. She has also served as chair of the ACRL Chapters Council. M artin R unkle, director o f the University o f Chicago Library, has b ee n elected chair of the Research Librar­ ies Group (RLG) Board of Directors. Jam es Michalko, RLG p r e s id e n t, sa id o f Runkle, “[he] has developed a real understanding o f the potential and complexity of the RLG agenda. … I look forw ard to w orking with [him] and expect to accomplish RLG’s strategic goals during his tenure.” Other new members of the board are: Reg C a rr, Bodley’s librarian at the University o f Oxford; N an cy M. Before joining USC, Campbell served from 1985 to 1996 as vice-provost for library affairs, uni­ versity librarian, and professor of the practice o f theological bibliography at Duke University. Rice Library and Media Services at the University of Southern Indiana. Miller has spent the last five years as a li­ brarian at Hong Kong University o f Science and Technology. Before that she served as head o f the Collection Development Departm ent at Indiana State University, in vari­ ous library positions at the University o f Evansville, Ruth H. Miller and as coordinator of col­ lection development and access at the Hong Kong Library. She is coeditor o f C ollection M an ag e­ m en t f o r th e 21st Century (Greenwood, 1996). Atkinson (1934– 1986) Hugh Craig Atkinson, director of the University o f Illinois Libraries, Ur ban a-C h am p aign , died O cto b e r 24 at a g e 52. Atkinson, who had been director for 10 years, presided over the com puterization o f the library’s card catalog, the construction o f the $6.7 million sixth stack addition, and, most recently, the acquisition of the library’s seven- millionth volume. Before moving to Illinois in 1976, Atkinson was director o f libraries at Ohio State Univer­ sity (1 9 7 1 -7 6 ), having served since 1967 as assistant director for public services. Born in Chicago, Atkinson attended St. B en e d ict’s College, w here he studied accounting and worked for Lawrence Scudder and Co. as a junior accountant (1 9 5 1–56). He studied En­ glish at the University o f Chicago and in 1959 received his MLS from Chicago’s Graduate Li­ brary School, at the same time working as an assistant in rare books at the university library. Atkinson served as reader services librar ia n at P e n n s y lv a n ia M ilita ry C o lle g e (1958– 61); head o f reference (1961– 64); act­ ing assistant director o f health sciences librar­ ies (1966– 67); and assistant director o f librar­ ies for te ch n ica l s e r­ vices (1964– 6 7 ) at the State University o f New York at Buffalo. He was a member o f the board o f directors o f the As­ sociation o f Research Libraries and OCLC, a m em ber o f the editorial board for t h e J o u r n a l o f L i b r a r y A d m i n i s t r a ­ tion, and was active in H u gh C. A tkin so n o th er p ro fessio n al li­ brary organizations. Among his recent publications were “Au­ tomation in Austerity” (a chapter in the 1984 book A usterity M a n a g e m e n t in A c a d e m ic Li b ra ries), “ Centralized Library Collections: A Brief for the Other Side” in the J o u r n a l o f A c a ­ d e m ic L ib r aria n s h ip , and several columns in the L ib r a r y J o u rn a l’s series on technology, people, and change. Lydia S h ah id has been named head o f the Monograph Section in the Catalog Department at the University o f California, Irvine. L au ra Sill is now head of the Serials Depart­ ment at the University Libraries o f Notre Dame. D eath s Suzanne L. Katz, interlibrary loan librarian at Queens College from 1987 to 1992, died in a plane crash on November 1 at the age o f 38. She was living in Hawaii and serving as corpo­ rate librarian at Rockwell International in Maui. P au l E v a n P e te rs , founding director o f the Coalition for Networked Inform ation (CNI), died on November 18 while walking with his wife on a beach in Florida. He was 48. Peters founded CNI and served as its head since March 1 9 9 0 . B e f o r e th a t he served as systems coor­ dinator at the New York Public Library from 1987 to 1989; assistant univer­ sity librarian for systems at Columbia University; and as a principal in a variety o f research and development projects at P au l E v an P eters the University o f Pitts­ burgh. A former mem ber o f the ALA Council, Peters was also former president o f ALA’s Li­ brary and Information Technology Association, and former chair of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). CNI Steering Committee chair Richard West said, “W e do not yet com prehend how much Paul will be missed.
