ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 116 / C&RL News ■ February 1998 P r e s e r v a t i o n N e w s Jane Hedberg Preservation planning guide The American Association of Museums (AAM) and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) have jointly published Pres­ ervation Planning: Guidelines for Writing a Long Range Plan. Written by Sherelyn Ogden, well-known book conservator, this loseleaf workbook details the process of writing a pres­ ervation plan once a collections needs assess­ ment has been completed. It is suitable for use by libraries, archives, historical societies, as well as museums. It contains worksheets, a checklist for the process, a sample plan, and information on updating and marketing. The worksheets also come on an IBM-compatible disc. ECPA mounts virtual exhibit The European Commission on Preservation and Access (ECPA) has mounted “A Virtual Exhibition of the Ravages of Dust, Water, Moulds, Fungi, Bookworms and Other Pests on the World Wide Web.” It contains an intro­ duction to preservation in libraries and ar­ chives, information about damage to paper and bookcovers, plus a section on the “creepy things” that can eat books. The various types of damage are illustrated by color photographs and the “creepy things” are illustrated by line drawings. Workshop on preserving photographs The Northeast Document Conservation Cen­ ter, in cooperation with the New England Museum Association, is presenting “Preserv­ ing Diversity Through Photographs” in Spring­ field, Massachusetts, on March 9, 1998. This one-day workshop will not only cover docu­ mentation, collection, organization, and pres­ ervation of photographs, but how to use them to reach out to culturally diverse communi­ ties. Faculty include Gary Albright, NEDCC; Gail Colglazier, Springfield Library and Muse­ ums; Cecelia Gross, Springfield Technical Com­ munity College; Jeanne Hall, museum con­ sultant; Margaret Humberston, Connecticut Valley Historical Museum; Millie O ’Connell, preservation consultant; Beth Patkus, preser­ vation consultant; and Theresa Rini Percy, Monson Free Library and Reading Room. The workshop costs $28, including lunch. Regis­ tration is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. SOLINET workshops The Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) will offer two one-day workshops in Febru­ ary and March 1998. The first workshop, “Pres­ ervation Management,” will be held on Tues­ day, February 24, at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. It will cover the role of the preservation manager, strategies for integrating preservation into operations, and planning and organizing preservation ac­ tivities. Julie Arnott, manager of the SOLINET Preservation Service, is the instructor. The sec­ ond workshop, “Beating the Critter Jitters: In­ tegrated Pest Management,” will be held on Thursday, March 26, at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. It will cover preventing and controlling pest problems through implementation of a management program. Michael Trinkley, director of the Chicora Foundation, is the instructor.
