Lee H isle W illiam M iller, director o f libraries at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), is the 59th p resident o f ACRL. W hen ask ed ab o u t his plans, Miller said, “I’m hu m b led by the opportunity to serve ACRL in this capacity, A mong other things, I h o p e to h elp m em bers better understand an d im plem ent the n ew Strategic Plan; establish th e u n derpinnings o f o u r new continuing e d u c a ­ tion program ; a n d w ork o n strengthening o u r relationships w ith o u r state an d regional c h ap ­ ters, looking tow ard th e establishm ent o f a leg­ islative netw o rk in particular. We also n e e d to b e involved in all o f ALA’s initiatives, so that they fully reflect the concerns o f academ ic an d research librarians.” As president, Miller will preside over th e ACRL B oard o f D irectors an d ACRL Executive Committee, chair the ACRL Conference Program Planning Committee for the 1997 Annual Con­ ference, an d plan ACRL’s major program at the conference. H e will also represent ACRL o n the ALA W ashington Conference Program Planning Committee an d o n the ALA Planning and Bud­ get Assembly, an d will represent ACRL an d ALA in their relations w ith other organizations. Miller has b e e n at FAU since 1987. B efore that h e served as associate dean o f libraries at Bowling G reen State University, h ead o f refer­ ence a n d governm ent docum ents at M ichigan State U niversity, a n d re fe re n c e lib ra ria n at Albion College. In ALA h e has served o n th e C oordinating Com m ittee o n Access to Inform ation, an d o n m any com m ittees an d program s o f ALA divi­ sions. In ACRL he has served as chair o f the B ibliographic Instruction Section (1984–85), on th e B u d g et a n d F in an ce C om m ittee (1992– present), o n th e Choice Editorial B oard (1980– 82), o n th e Planning C omm ittee (1988–90), and as chair o f the Professional Liaison Comm ittee (1994– present). In th e M ichigan Library A ssociation Miller h as served as chair o f th e Academic D ivision/ ACRL Chapter, o n th e Editorial B oard o f M ichi­ g a n Librarian‚ a n d o n th e Executive Board. He h as also b e e n active in th e Southeast Florida Library Inform ation N etw ork a n d th e C enter for R esearch Libraries. W. Hisle is excited ab o u t his election, noting that it is th e first tim e in m ore th an 30 years that a representative o f a com m unity college has b e e n elected to lead ACRL. Hisle h o p e s to concentrate his efforts on increasing th e influence o f academ ic librarians in th e national inform ation policy debates, col­ laborating w ith higher education organizations, p rom oting library advocacy, a n d developing continuing education opportunities. Hisle has previously served as director an d d e a n o f Learning R esource Services at ACC (1985– 95); co o rd in ato r o f Learning R esource Services at Rio G rande an d H ealth Sciences C am puses, ACC (1980–85); a n d library director o f the Lexington Technical Institute at the Uni­ versity o f K entucky C om m unity College Sys­ tem (1976–80). In ALA Hisle has served as a m em ber o f the Council since 1994; o n th e ALA Standards Com­ m ittee, an d as its chair in 1995–96; a n d o n th e C om m ittee o n O rganization.
