It is h ard to im agine academ ic librarians staying o n to p o f th eir pro fessio n w ithout the News a n d its associa­ tio n in fo rm a tio n , jo b ads, P eople colum ns, an d prac­ tical articles. After 30 years of publishing th e News‚ w e can proudly look back on m any accom plishm ents and successes. As h a p p e n s w ith m a n y journals an d new sletters, C&RL News began life as a supplem ent to another publication, College a n d Re-search Libraries (C&RL). After a brief time as ACRL News in 1966, C&RL News has enjoyed th ree d ecad es o f success as an in d e p e n d e n t entity. H ow ever, the roots o f C&RL News go ev en deeper. T he first issue of C&RL (D ecem ber 1939) contains the colum n “News from th e Field.” Co­ incidentally, that first colum n contains a note ab o u t the d edication o f th e Rose Memorial Li­ brary at D rew University. M inutes o f the ACRL business m eeting w ere prin ted in th e first issue of C&RL. Both o f these functions, reporting as­ sociation business as the official m edium o f com ­ munication betw een ACRL an d its m em bers, and serving as a clearinghouse for library new s by ann o u n cin g personnel changes are still im por­ tan t com ponents o f to d ay ’s News. A nniversaries a re the perfect occasions for celebrations T o celebrate the N ew s’ 30th anniversary, the 1995– 96 Editorial B oard has p la n n e d a year­ long series o f events. T he cover o f this issue graphically illustrates th e changing face o f the News. An ongoing anniversary quiz will test your ability to m atch headlines w ith a publication y ear a n d answ er questions ab o u t events cov­ ered in the News over the past 30 years. Each issue o f the News during this cele-bratory year will include excerpts from past issues featuring histori­ cal s p o ts a n d p ro m in e n t people. T he Editorial B oard comm issioned several articles especially for this anniversary year: Ed Holley will write a ret­ rospective o n th e last 30 years of the News; P eter Lyman will fo re c a st w h a t th e n e x t 30 y e a r s h o l d f o r a c a d e m i c li b r a r i a n s h i p ; a n d N o rm Stevens will contribute a h u ­ m orous an d w him sical look at th e News. W hat can you expect from C&RL News in th e years ahead? O f course there will b e cur­ rent information relating to issues, activities, and personalities o f ' the higher education an d aca­ d em ic library fields. But th e News also strives to k e e p its focus in step w ith th e changes in college an d research libraries. As academ ic librarians have interacted m ore a n d m ore w ith com puting professionals, higher education associations, an d subject-oriented or­ ganizations, th e News has pub lish ed reports on m eetings o f kindred groups such as educational an d research agencies an d learn ed societies.
