M etcalf w as o n e o f the first recipients of ACRL’s A cadem ic o r Research Librarian o f th e Y ear aw ard in 1978 an d served as ALA Presi­ d en t in 1942–43. B esides 12 h o n o rary doctorates, Metcalf h eld a B.A. in history from O berlin College a n d a certificate a n d d iplom a from th e Li­ brary School o f the N ew Y ork Public Library g ran ted in 1914. H e serv ed as vice-president o f th e A m erican A ntiquarian Society an d as tru ste e to th e B elm ont P ublic Library, th e B oston A thenaeum , an d Radcliffe College. In th e July 1976 issue o f C&RL, D avid W e­ b e r describ ed Metcalf: “I believe his greatest contributions w ere th o se in p erso n al devel­ o p m e n t an d co o p erativ e program s.
