Virgo became executive secre­ tary of the Association of College and Research Libraries on April 4, 1977, succeeding Dr. Beverly P. Lynch, who is now serving as uni­ versity librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. A native of Adelaide, South Australia, Dr. Julie A. Virgo Virgo holds a registration certificate from the Library Association of Australia and a master’s degree and a doctorate in librarianship from the University of Chicago. In Australia, Dr. Virgo served as a librarian at the State Library of South Australia and as librarian of the Repatriation Department of South Australia. Since coming to the United States, she has worked in the library at the University of Chicago and has been a lecturer in the University of Chicago Graduate Library School. Until her appointment as executive secretary of ACRL, Dr. Virgo served as director of edu­ cation for the Medical Library Association. In this position, she was instrumental in broaden­ ing and refining MLA’s educational programs to the point where they now serve as models for other organizations, and she was deeply in­ volved in the development and implementation of MLA’s new competency-based certification code. Dr. Virgo is a member of numerous profes­ sional organizations and has been an active participant in the affairs of the American Li­ brary Association. She is a frequent contributor to library and other professional journals. The ACRL membership extends an enthusi­ astic welcome to Dr. Virgo. Connie R.
