Buschman, who joined Rider in 1988, is editor of Critical Approaches to Inform a­ tion Technology in Librarianship: Founda­ tions a n d Applications (Greenwood Press)— for which he wrote three chapters. He is a member of ACRL and the Progressive Librar­ ians Guild and coeditor of the journal Pro­ gressive Librarian. T rudi B ellard o H ah n , manager of Library User Education Services and adjunct pro­ fessor at the College of Information Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, has co­ authored a new book, A History o f Online In form ation Services, 1963-1976, with Charles P. Bourne, a pioneer in information retrieval services. Bourne was formerly director of the Institute of Library Re­ search at the University of California and vice president of DIALOG Inform ation Services. Trudi Bellardo Hahn The n ew b o o k p r o ­ vides a rich narrative of the early develop­ ment of online information retrieval systems and services, from 1963 to 1976—a period important to anyone w ho uses a search en­ gine, online catalog, or large database. W illia m H a n n a f o r d has b e e n aw ard ed two Fulbrights. He will spend six weeks in the fall 2003 as a Fulbright senior specialist in Thesssaloniki, Greece, at the University of Macedonia, consulting and giving a seminar in management and leadership. In the spring, he is slated to spend six months at Moldova State University as a Fulbright Scholar, again focusing on m anagem ent and leadership. Hannaford has been a library director at five different institutions, including the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, and has lived in Greece for a total of three years. His pu b ­ lications include a num ber of articles and three books. Hannaford has recently moved to New Mexico, w here he plans to teach phi­ losophy after completing his Fulbright work. S u sa n H o ller, manager of the Knowledge Navigation Center at the University of Michi­ gan (UM)-Ann Arbor, has been awarded the U niversity Librarian R ecognition Award (which recognizes innovative early career achievements) and J e a n L oup, librarian at UM, has been selected for the University Li­ brarian Achievement Award (which recog­ nizes exceptional distinction in career-long achievements). Lee will participate in the GTF Academic Year Sym­ posia Program w here she will attend a num ­ ber of three-day symposia on the University of Georgia campus w hile engaging in in­ s tr u c tio n a l im p r o v e m e n t p r o je c ts at Wesleyan. Lee is the first librarian accepted in the GTF program. Three new Board members were also elected by the membership to serve three-year terms. A n n e T u rk os, university archivist and as­ sociate curator of archives and manuscripts at the University of Maryland-College Park, w a s in d u c te d in to th e U n iv e rs ity o f Maryland’s M Club as an honorary member at the group’s annual dinner. The M Club, com posed of all ath­ letic letterw inners at the university, is one of the oldest such orga­ nizations in the United States, h av in g b e e n f o u n d e d in 1923. Turkos, a long-time ac­ tive advocate for pre­ Anne Turkos serving and publiciz­ ing the University of Maryland’s athletic heri­ tage, was inducted for fostering the strong linkage between the University Archives and sports throughout the history of the campus. The Archives contain a vast quantity of mate­ rials relating to athletics, including photographs and slides; media guides; game day programs; newsclippings; audio and videotape; film; game statistics; press releases; correspon­ dence; minutes of the Athletic Council; cer­ emonial footballs; examples of uniforms over the years; and many other sports-related memorabilia items. Before coming to the Uni­ versity of Maryland in 1985, Turkos spent four years as a field archivist at the Baltimore City Archives and Records Center (BCARC). D e a t h s C a r o lin e C o u g h lin , 58, academ ic librar­ ian and library educator, has died. Coughlin served as director o f the Drew University Li­ brary in Madison, New Jersey (1985-94), w here she also held the title of associate professor of bibliography and research. Prior to that appointment she was assistant direc­ tor (1978-85). During h er tenure she led projects to renovate and expand the Rose C&RL News ■ December 2003 / 7 7 1 Memorial Library, automate the library cata­ log, and fund an Endow-A-Book program. Coughlin published a num ber o f books and research papers in the areas of information resources management, library administra­ tion, personnel management, and issues in librarianship. She was co-editor of the offi­ cial journal of the youth services division of the ALA (1974-77). In 1992 and 1997, she co-authored revisions o f a standard text, Lyle’s A dm inistration o f the College Library. She was active in ALA, s a v in g on its Coun­ cil (1976-77 and 1979-80), as well as on n u ­ merous committees. Coughlin expressed a keen interest in supporting ALA’S Spectrum In itia tiv e . M i l t o n G. “R o y ” D a n i e l , d ir e c to r o f Brigham Y oung University’s Learning Re­ source Center, died June 24. Daniel began serving at the university library in 1979 as supervisor of the Learning Resource Center. In 1982 he became m anager o f the Learning Resources Division and earned his M.A. in Communications from BYU. He was also instrumental in managing personnel, equip­ ment, and scheduling during the libraiy’s re­ cent major expansion. C h ad J o h n F lake, curator of Special Col­ lections at Brigham Young University, died June 18 from leukemia. He came to BYU in 1955 after earning his M.A. degree in Library Science at Denver University. While at BYU he served as general reference librarian, docum ents librarian and helped acquire and preserve many rare books and manuscripts as curator. He became assistant professor in 1968 and associate professor in 1973. His award-winning work, Mormon Bibliography, 1830-1930, serves as an important reference guide. M a r y J a n e T a c c h i, 61, c o o rd in a to r o f Young Adult Seivices at the New York Pub­ lic Library (NYPL) since 1998, has died. She began h e r career w ith in th e NYPL Branch Libraries in 1966, first w orking as a refer­ en ce librarian at th e W akefield Branc in th e Bronx.
