PCS, formerly located at Columbia University, is an im portant national training program for preservation pro­ fessionals, with 80 graduates to date. RLG publishes proceedings of digital symposium The Research Libraries Group (RLG) has pub­ lished “Digital Imaging T ech nolog y for Preser­ vation,” the proceedings o f a symposium held at Cornell University in March 1994. More than 90 preservation and inform ation professionals from RLG libraries attended the two-day sym­ posium to consider both the potential and real­ ity o f “digital preservation.” In addition to pre­ sentations by speakers, the symposium included an “Imaging E xposition” by vendors o f digital imaging systems/applications and participants in library digital imaging projects. CCAHA receives NEH gran t for w o rksh o p s an d su rveys The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia has received a three-year, $210,117 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to sup­ port tw o new w orkshops and to subsidize a conservation survey program. O n e w orkshop will cover environm ental m onitoring and the other will cover handling oversized architec­ tural records. Each will b e offered six times during the th ree years in various lo catio n s throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. T he overview c o n ­ servation surveys are d e ­ signed for nonprofit institu­ tio n s w h ic h h a v e p a p er- based collection s o f lon g­ term value to the study and u n derstand ing o f th e h u ­ manities. T h e cen ter is currently solicitin g a p p licatio n s for the limited num ber o f con ­ servation surveys. T he sur­ vey con sists o f a one-d ay site visit b y a m em ber o f the CCAHA staff and a report featuring observa­ tions and recom m endations. Cost to the institu­ tion is $300, plus travel exp en ses for the sur­ veyor. Applications will b e reviewed as they are received and institutions will b e selected throughout the year. U C-Berkeley investigates digital encoding of finding aids T he B erkeley Finding Aid P roject at the Library o f the University o f California, B erkeley, has b e e n investigating the b est m ethods for digital encoding o f the finding aids used by special collections, archives, and pictorial collections. Project staff have begun creation o f a 1,000 find­ ing aid database using a Standard Generalized Markup Language D ocum ent Type Definition (SGML D T D ) p ro to ty p e standard.
