D eaths Thelma Brackett, former New Hampshire state librarian (1933– 1942) and University o f New Hampshire librarian (1942– 1962), died last sum­ mer. Brackett first w orked in Y ureka, Califor­ nia, delivering b o o k s o n h orseback to rangers in the mountains o f Siskeyou County. Elizabeth Futas, d irec to r o f th e G radu ate Sch ool o f Library and Inform ation Studies at the University o f Rhode Island (URI), Kingston, died February 6 w hile attending the ALA Mid­ w inter M eeting in Philadelphia. A graduate of B rooklyn College and the University o f Minne­ sota, Futas received her Ph.D. from Rutgers Uni­ versity. She taught in the library scien ce pro­ g r a m a t E m o r y U n iv e r s it y b e f o r e h e r appointm ent at URI. Active in ALA, Futas served o n the Council and the Executive Board and w as involved in many ALA activities including the Social Responsibilities Round T able and the Fem inist Task Force. She was past editor o f RQ and the author o f several b o o k s and numerous articles. At the ALA con feren ce in Philadelphia Futas w as ch o sen to receive the B eta Phi Mu Award for distinguished service to education for librarianship. Miss Roy Land, professor emeritus and 47-year veteran o f the University o f Virginia (UV) Li­ brary, died last O ctober. Land w orked in circu­ lation at UV from 1930 until her retirem ent in 1977. Active in the profession, Land served as president o f the Virginia Library Association, treasurer and board m em ber o f the Southeast­ ern Library Association, secretary o f ACRL’s Uni­ versity Library Section, and ALA Council m em­ ber. In 1 9 5 9 -1 9 6 0 sh e served as a consultant for the United B oard o f Christian Higher Edu­ cation in Asia and visited libraries in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Taiwan. William Andrew Moffett, director o f the Hun­ tington Library in San Marino, California, died April 1 9 9 5 / 2 8 7 February 20 after a tw o-year battle with cancer. dem ic or R esearch Librarian o f the Y ear in 1993. T h e Sim m ons College Graduate Sch ool o f Library and Inform ation Science gave Moffett its Alumni A chievem ent Award in 1994. Moffett is p robably b est know n, profession­ ally, fo r giving access to the Huntington's p h o ­ tographic archive o f the D ead Sea Scrolls to qualified scholars in 1991, breaking the 40-year scholarly m onopoly o n Scrolls study. At the time Moffett said, “W h en you free the Scrolls ýou free the scholars. O pening access to the D ead Sea Scrolls is an affirmation o f the m ission o f research libraries: not m erely to store and pre­ serve inform ation, but to m ake it available in as free and unfrettered a w ay as p ossib le.” Elma Cole Pamplin, w ho retired from the Cen­ tral Intelligence A gency (CIA) as a reference librarian in 1976, died in Janu ary at the age o f 79. She held m any jo b s b efo re joining the CIA in 1953, w here sh e also w orked as an intelli­ g en ce analyst. He was 62. A native o f Charlotte, North Caro­ lina, Moffett received his u n d erg rad u ate d e g r e e from Davidson C ollege, his M.A. and Ph.D. in his­ tory from D u ke Univer­ sity, and his MLS from Simmons College. Before joining the Huntington, he serv e d as a s sista n t professor o f h istory at Alma College (1964– 68 ) and at the University o f WUlíam A. Moffett Massachusetts (1968–74), director o f libraries for the State University o f New York/College at Potsdam (1974– 79), and the Azariah Smith Root director o f libraries at Oberlin College (1979– 90). Moffett was an active m em ber o f ALA’s Com­ mittee o n Intellectual Freedom , the D u ke Uni­ versity Libraries B o ard o f Advisors, and the UCLA Graduate Sch ool o f Library and Inform a­ tion Scien ces Advisory Com m ittee.
