Tulane University has received a $1.9 mil­
lion gift from the estate of Virginia Brown Miceli. 
The gift was given in appreciation of the Howard- 
Tilton Memorial Library (HTML) staffs support 
o f the research o f Miceli's husband, Augusto 
Miceli, a prominent New Orleans attorney and 
regional historian. This unrestricted gift will be 
used to strengthen HTML’s collection.

Columbia Uni versity has received $100,000
from the New York TimesNeediest Fund to build 
upon its September 11 archives ‚ which include 400 
oral history interviews conducted for its September
11, 2001 Oral History Narrative and Memory 
Project. The money will be used to conduct 40 new 
interviews with leaders in the fields o f mental 
health, law, employment, education and 
philanthropy, who mobilized quickly following 
the catastrophe to provide services.

The National Endowment for the Human­
ities has awarded $349,778 to establish the 
Northwest Digital Archives. Oregon State 
University Libraries will serve as the lead institution 
for the two-year project, which will provide 
enhanced access to archival and manuscript 
materials in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and 
Washington through a union database of Encoded 
Archival Description (EAD) finding aids.

The University of California-San Diego
(UCSD) has received $850,000 from the Andrew 
W. Mellon Foundation to support strategic digital 
media initiatives. The two-year funding will support 
the cataloging of art images and their deployment 
in digital form for educational purposes. The 
UCSD Libraries will partner with the Fine Arts 
Library at Harvard University and the Ingalls 
Library o f the Cleveland Museum of Art to create 
a prototype Union Catalog for Art Images, which 
will bring together approximately 500,000 metadata 
records describing art works and other images.

A c q u i s i t i o n s

The private library of Thomas Naff, former
director o f the Middle East Research Institute at

the University of Pennsylvania, has been donated 
to Portand State University. Valued at more than 
$100,000, the collection o f 1,706 titles (written in 
Western languages, modem and Ottoman Turkish, 
and Arabic) primarily reflects Naff’s research 
interests in the history and diplomatic affairs of the 
Middle East. The collection contains microfilmed 
copies of Turkish political correspondence from 
the Ottoman era as well as photocopies of 
diplomatic documents from the same period.

The papers of U.S. Senator Eugene J.
McCarthy have been acquired by the University of 
Minnesota (UM). McCarthy received a master of 
arts degreein sociology from  U M  in  l938.The 
McCarthy papers, which are contained in 
approximately 500 record cartons, were transferred 
from Georgetown University at the request of 
McCarthy. The papers contain office and national 
campaign files, audiovisual materials and campaign 
film footage, advertising, correspondence, press 
releases, speeches, oral history transcripts that 
were part of the McCarthy Historical Project, card 
files, news clippings, books, and other materials.

The papers of American writer Susan
Sontag have been acquired by UCLA. Among 
Sontag’s works are four novels, The Benefactor, 
Death Kit, The VolcanoLover, and InAmerica, which 
won the National Book Award for Fiction in 
2000; a collection o f stories, I, etcetera; a play, 
Alice in Bed; and seven works o f nonfiction, 
including On Photograph, which won a National 
Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism, and 
the recent Where the Stress Falls  Sontag was 
awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 2001 for the 
body of her work. The extensive literary archive 
includes manuscripts o f her writings; her 
correspondence with important contemporary 
writers, artists, and musicians; her personal 
notebooks and private library, which comprises 
more than 20,000 books in all areas of literature, 
the arts, history, and the social sciences. ■
