Benezra joined the Art Institute in 1985 as an associate curator then be­ came a full curator two years later. Before that he was curator at the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa. A native o f Northern California, Benezra earned simultaneous bachelor’s degrees in art history and political science at the University o f California at Berkeley in 1976, and a doctorate in art history from Stanford University in 1983. He has published widely, won a number o f fellowships, and served on numerous panels and advisory committees (for the National Endowment for the Humanities, Sculp­ ture Chicago, and other organizations). S c o t t D r o n e - S i l v e r s has been named director o f the Learning Resource Center at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Illi­ nois. Drone-Silvers re­ cently earned his MLS at the University o f Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and has a bachelor’s in secon d a ry edu ca tion from the University o f Missouri, Kansas City. He is a member o f ALA, the Special Library Asso­ ciation, and Phi Alpha Scott Drone-Silυers Theta, a national honor society for history. D a v i d L. E a s t e r b r o o k has been appointed curator o f the Melville J. Herskovits Library o f African Studies at Northwestern University, effec­ tive December 1991. Since 1986 Easterbrook has been principal bibliographer at the University o f Illinois at Chicago, and serving as bibliographer for professional studies there for seven years. Before that he served as African studies area specialist at Indiana University and African bibliographer at Syracuse University. Easterbrook hholds a B.A. in history from Kalamazoo College and an MLS from the State University o f New York at Albany. He has been an active member o f ALA, ACRL, and the African Studies Association serving as chair o f the Asian and African Section o f ACRL and chair o f the Archives-Libraries Committee o f the African Stud­ ies Association. The author o f many publications, Easterbrook was the recipient o f the 1989 F ulbright Award for study at the School o f Oriental and African Studies at the University o f London. S a l l i e H. E l l i s o n has been named director o f Purdy/Kresge Library and Media Services at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan. Her career includes serving most recently as director o f the Tampa Campus Library at the University o f South Florida and positions at the Massachusetts Bureau o f Library Extension, the University o f Nebraska at Omaha, the University o f Oregon, and Bowling Green State University. D o u g h e r t y , a professor at the University o f Michigan School o f Information and Library Studies, was awarded the degree o f D octor o f Humane Letters honoris causa in recognition o f his scholarship, leadership, and service to the inter­ national community o f libraries by Purdue Univer­ sity at its com mencement in May. Dougherty is past-president o f ALA. S h i r l e y F i t z g i b b o n s , associate professor in the School o f Library and Information Science at Indi­ ana University, has been elected chair o f the Inter­ national Federation o f Library Associations’ (IFLA) Section on Children’s Libraries. An invited speaker at IFLA’s 57th Council and General Conference in M oscow in August, her presentation focused on the factors that contribute to reading motivation among middle grade school children. J a m e s D . F o l t s , L a r r y H a c k m a n , and J u d y H o h m a n n o f the New York State Archives and Records Administration were the recipients o f the Society o f American Archivists’ Philip M. Hamer/ Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award for the program o f activities they initiated to increase public awareness o f the records o f the New York Supreme Court. The centerpiece o f their work is a history and finding aid titled Dueltj and Constantly Kept: A History o f the New York Supreme Court, 1691-1847, and. an Inventory o f Its Records, written by Folts, and published jointly by the New York State Archives and the New York State Court o f Appeals. Hackman is the director o f the New York State Archives and Records Administration, Folts is an associate archi­ vist there, and Hohmann is a senior public and education program specialist. The award was pre­ sented in Philadelphia in September. C h a r l e s A. H a m a k e r , assistant dean for collec­ tion development at the Louisiana State University Libraries in Baton Rouge, was presented with the Alumni Award o f the School o f Library and Infor- December 1991 / 753 matíon Sciences o f Brigham Young University. The award was given in recognition o f Hamaker’s ser­ vice to libraries in collection development and to acknowledge service that exemplifies professional and personal excellence. B a r b a r a H a n e r , science reference librarian at the University o f California, Riverside, was named the winner o f the Geoscience Information Society’s (GIS) 1991 Best Paper Award for her paper “Guide­ book Citation Patterns in the Geologic Journal Literature: A Comparison between 1985 and 1967” (GIS Proceedings, volume 20, pp. 159-69, 1990). She was presented with the award at the GIS annual conference in San Diego in October. B r i a n L a n d , director o f the Ontario Legislative Library (OLL) and member o f the University o f Toronto (UT) Faculty o f Library and Information Science, was awarded the Canadian Association o f Special Libraries and Information Services’ 1991 Award for Special Librarianship. Land was cited for his work as executive director o f the OLL, for his work with the Association o f Parliamentary Librar­ ians in Canada, and for his reference source, The Directory o f Associations in Canada. Land received his B.A., M.A., BLS, and MLS from the University o f Toronto. After holding positions with the Toronto Public Library and the University o f Toronto Li­ brary, where he rose to the rank o f associate chief librarian, Land became director o f the UT School o f Library Science in 1964. M a r y B o b i n s o n , a student in the Wayne State University (WSU) Library Science Program, was awarded this year’s Baker & Taylor/Michigan Li­ brary Association (MLA) Grass Roots award. The cash prize o f $250 funded her attendance at the MLA conference in October. Another WSU stu­ dent, Joanne Venetos Dallis, was chosen as an award alternate. D e b o r a S h a w , associate professor at the Indiana University School o f Library and Information Sci­ ence, has been appointed associate editor o f Hypermedia, a leading international research jour­ nal devoted to practical and theoretical develop­ ments in hypertext, hypermedia, interactive multi- media systems, and related areas. It is published three times a year by Taylor Graham o f London and Los Angeles. Shaw is currently director-at-large o f the American Society for Information Science and brings to her new assignment considerable research experience in interface design, information retrieval, and database management. B o b b i e S m i t h , head librarian and coordinator o f libraries at Long Beach City College, California, has been elected the 1991-92 president o f the Board o f Education o f the 75,000-student Long Beach Uni­ fied School District. She was elected to the govern­ ing board o f the school district in 1988, and is the first African-American member and president in the district’s 106-year history. Smith earned her bachelor’s degree from Eureka College, Illinois, and her MLS from the University o f Illinois. She is a member o f ALA and the California Library As­ sociation; past-president o f the Academic Senate and o f the City College Teachers Association; a m em ber o f the Long Bobbie Smith Beach City College Plan­ ning Council; and served for four years on the California Teachers Association State Council. An active life member o f the NAACP and executive board member o f the Long Beach branch, Smith is also a past executive board member and parliamen­ tarian o f the National Council o f Negro Women. She is the recipient o f many awards and honors including the Mary M cLeod Bethune Award from the National Council o f Negro Women, a U.S. Navy award and citation as a role model and pacesetter, a National Education Association Award for signifi­ cant contributions to national political action on behalf ofpubliceducation, and the Masonic Lodges Meritorious Service to Public Education Award. K a t h y T e z l a , social sciences coordinator for collections and technical services in the General Libraries o f Emory University, has received a Fulbright scholar grant to support her research in the Szechenyi National Library in Budapest, Hun­ gary. Tezla will spend three months this fall consult­ ing the extensive collection o f American-Hungar- ian immigrant newspapers to complete an edition o f documents dealing with female immigrants who came to the U.S. from Hungary between 1895 and 1920. The Corvina Publishing House in Budapest will publish the work in English translation. W i l l i a m D . W a l k e r , associate director for the New York Public Library Science, Industry and Business Library, has been named Astor Fellow for 1991-92 by library president Timothy S. Healy. During his tenure, Walker will develop a public service model to meet the increasingly sophisti­ cated information needs o f the scientific and busi­ ness communities. The model will specifically ad­ dress the innovations in information technology in the next century. Walker’s experience in the field includes positions as director o f the Medical Li­ brary Center o f New York and head o f information 754 / C &RL News services at the University o f Illinois Medical Center. He holds an MLS from the University o f Michigan and is a mem ber o f Beta Phi Mu, the national libraiy science honor society. H e has published numerous articles on library technology. The Astor Fellowship was established in 1982 through a $1 million gift from the Vincent Astor Foundation and supports the development o f special projects and innovative programs. A n n B a k e r W a r d , head o f the Interlibrary C en ­ ter at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries in Raleigh, has been selected to partici­ pate in the university’s Language/Cultural/Profes­ sional/D evelopm en t Program, a collaborative project o f the U.S. Agency for International Devel­ opment, Florida A&M University, and NCSU aimed at providing faculty with an opportunity to gain knowledge o f another culture and com petency in another language. Ward will spend three months, from January to March 1992, in Togo, a country in western Africa, receiving intensive French-language instruction and attending lectures on U.S. assis­ tance efforts for econom ic and social development. Her participation in the program will help her learn more about the information resources needed to support research in tropical areas. N a n c y W i l l i a m s o n , professor in the University o f Toronto Library and Information Science pro­ gram, was honored as the Distinguished Academic Librarian o f the Year for 1991 by the Canadian Association o f College and University Libraries at its annual meeting in Montreal in June. Williamson was cited for her achievements as a teacher and as a researcher in classification and subject access to information in online retrieval systems. She re­ cently chaired the 5th International Study Confer­ ence on Classification Research in Toronto, and is currently chair o f the Committee on Classification Research o f the International F ederation for Infor­ mation and Documentation. She received her B.A. from Mount Allison University, a BLS and MLS from the University o f Toronto, and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. B ucknall began her career at the UT Library in the early 1950s as a clerical assis­ tant, then worked as a half-time library assis­ tant, and as a serials cata­ loger. In 1961 she joined the University o f Wash­ ington, Seatde, staff as a serials cataloger, then joined the University o f Massachusetts, Amherst, staff as head o f serials Carolyn Bucknall acquisition and catalog­ ing. In 1965 she accepted the position o f head o f the Acquisitions Depart­ ment at the State University o f N ew York at Binghamton. She returned to UT in 1967 as chief acquisitions librarian and was appointed to her most recent position in 1975. Bucknall received her B.A. in 1953 and her MLS in 1960, both from UT. She has served as chair o f the C hief Collection D evelop­ ment Officers o f Large Research Libraries, vice chair o f ALA's Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Resources Sec­ tion, current chair o f A LC TS’s Collection Manage­ ment and Development Section, and has served on numerous other committees and subcommittees o f ALA and ACRL. J a c k L e i s t e r , head librarian at the Institute o f Governmental Studies Library at the University o f California, Berkeley, retired in September after more than 30 years o f service. On the Berkeley campus Leister served on numerous library stand­ ing, advisory, and ad hoc committees and task forces. H e served as statewide president for the Librarians Association o f the University o f Califor­ nia in 1980-81, and was an active participant in the Affiliated Librarians’ Administrative Group. Leister was especially active in the Special Libraries Asso­ ciation (SLA), serving on the Board o f Directors for five years, on the Finance Committee, as confer­ ence planning chair o f the Honolulu conference in 1979, and as president o f the local chapter in 1976- 77. In 1987 Leister was named one o f the first Fellows o f SLA, recognizing his outstanding contri­ butions to the association and to special libraries. The author o f bibliographic works in the field o f state and local government, Leister also served on the editorial board o f G reenwood Press’ Index to Current Urban Documents. He was also instrumen­ tal in the inception o f Statistical Reference Index, a major index to non-federal statistical datapublished by private organizations and public agencies in the U.S. In recognition o f all his accomplishments, Leister was awarded the university's Distinguished Service Award upon his retirement. A Shiffman employee since 1969, Taylor served the library in many capacities, including director o f the library from 1981-83 and adjunct faculty member to the Library Science Program. She has been an active member o f the Metropolitan Detroit Medi­ cal Library Group, the Medical Library Associa­ tion, the Michigan Database Users Group, the Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association, and the Midwest Chapter o f the Medical Library Association. Deaths J . T r a v i s L e a c h , serials acquisitions librarian at the University o f Arizona (UA), Tucson, died in September. He had worked at the library for 19 years. He was first hired as a graduate student assistant in the Catalog Department in 1970, spent a year working at the University o f California at Davis, then began his tenure at UA in 1972 as a catalog librarian. He received his B.A. in 1958 and a Ph.D. in 1962 from the University o f Louisville, and his MLS from UA in 1971. M a n u e l D e n n i s L o p e z , librarian in the Univer­ sity Libraries o f the State University o f New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB), died in September at the age of 57. A member o f the SUNYAB staff since 1964, Lopez served as curator o f library exhibitions, ref­ erence librarian at Lockwood Library, and head o f the Architecture and Planning Library. His contri­ butions were recognized in 1978 with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarian­ ship. O f special importance to Lopez was the sup­ port o f the university’s large international student population, and his orientation to the libraries for international students won national recognition and was featured in C&RL in 1983. An accomplished scholar in librarianship, Lopez recently received notification that his book Chinese Drama: An Anno­ tated Bibliography had been published by Scare­ crow Press. He was also the author o f New York: A Guideto Information and Reference Sources (1987), and served as the coordinating editor o f the 1984 William Hein publication o f the Catalog o f the Polish Room Collection: Lockwood Menwrial Li­ brary. Lopez earned his B.A. from Clark University and his MLS from Drexel University. J u d y M o r t o n , former head o f the Engineering Libraiy at the University o f California, Berkeley, died in October. Morton joined the library’s staff in 1949 and retired in 1981. She received her MLS from UC Berkeley and served in World War II as a member o f the U.S. Marine Corps, WR. J a n e P a i r o , manager o f SOLINET’s Preserva­ tion Program, died in October in Philadelphia while attending the Society o f American Archivists Con­ ference. Pairo joined SOLINET in January 1990. Before that she had served as assistant state archi­ vist in Virginia and had more than 20 years experi­ ence in education, archives, preservation, and man­ agement. She earned her MLS from Catholic Uni­ versity and her M .A. in education from the Univer­ sity o f Virginia. D a v i d R o s e n b a u m , former reference librarian at Wayne State University (WSU), died in August. Rosenbaum joined the WSU Libraries in 1969 and retired in 1987. He remained at the Purdy/Kresge Library on a part-time basis until December 1990. A frequent contributor to library journals through­ out his career, Rosenbaum was also a part-time instructor for the WSU Library Science Program from 1966-75. L a w r e n c e Z w e i z i g , reference librarian at the ALA Headquarters Library in Chicago, died in September o f Hodgkin’s disease at the age o f 24. Zweizig joined the ALA staff in 1991. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University o f Washington and an MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
