Mortenson distinguished professor at the University o f Illinois Library at Urbana- Champaign, is the third recipient o f the Pushkin Medal for extraordinary contributions to Rus­ sian culture and education. Choldin has worked closely with Russian libraries and librarians for the past decade and addressed issues such as access to information, intellectual freedom, and the history o f censorship. Ann Hamilton, associate university librar­ ian at Georgia Southern University, has b een elected vice president/president-elect o f the Southeastern Library Association for the 2 0 0 1 - 02 biennium. She recently completed her term as immediate past president o f the Georgia Library Association. Anne L. Highsmith, consortia systems c o ­ ordinator for Texas A&M University Libraries, received the Distinguished Achievement in Librarianship Award. Presented annually by the Association o f Former Students, the award recognizes exceptional contributions to the ef­ fective service and op­ erations o f the Univer­ sity L ibraries and its affiliates throughout the Texas A&M University System. As systems co­ o rd in a to r, H ighsm ith oversees the integrated library systems for six of Anne L. Highsmith the libraries in the Texas A&M system. She played a central role in the recent migration o f the library consortia from NOTIS to Voyager. Highsmith has published extensively on technology applications and in the field o f music. She served on the original TexShare Management Team, which resulted in a successful cooperative effort for the 52- member institutions o f the Texas Council of State University Libraries (TCSUL). Richard K. Iieberman, of the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives at CUNY, received the Sloan Public Service Award from the Fund for the City o f New York for extraordinary public service in the field o f public education. A p p o i n t m e n t s Debbie Malone has been appointed library director at Trexler Library at Allentown Col­ lege o f St. Francis de Sales. She is the ACRL- D elaw are Valley Chapter president. Previ­ ously, Malone was head o f technical services at Ursinu College. Rona Ostrow has been appointed ch ief li­ brarian at Lehman College Library, CUNY. Ostrow came to Lehman College from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she served as as­ sistant campus provost, and from Marymount Manhattan College, where she served as chief librarian. Prior to that she served as associate dean o f libraries for public services at Adelphi University, associate director o f the Graduate Business Resource Center at Baαich College, CUNY, and as a reference librarian at both the New York Public Library and the Fashion In­ stitute o f Technology. Harvey Varnet is now director o f Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library. Varnet, who was director o f the libraries at Simmons College in Boston for the past three years, previously served as director o f library ser­ vices at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts (1 9 9 3 -9 6 ). He was the coordi­ nator for the library, the Centre for Educa­ tional Technology, and the Computer Centre at the Sultan Q aboos University in Oman (1983-85). Among his other career highlights, Varnet was a Fulbright professor in educa­ tional technology at the University o f Cala­ bar in Nigeria for a year and served as both the director o f the library and as the ch ief information services officer at Governors State University in Illinois (1 9 8 5 -9 3 ). Varnet is the current president o f the New England Chap­ ter o f ACRL and has b e e n elected to a two- 1048 / C&RL News ■ D ecem ber 2000 year term as president o f the Massachusetts Chapter o f the Fulbright Association. Pat Weaver is now th e d irec to r o f the Campbell Library at Saint Jo se p h ’s University in Philadelphia. She had been head librarian at Pennsylvania State Abington since 1997. Lizabeth (Betsy) A. Wilson, associate direc­ tor o f libraries at the University o f Washing­ ton (UW) since 1992, has been appointed director o f university li­ braries at UW. “I am honored to have been selected to lead the UW Libraries into the 21st century,” W ilson said. “E d u c a tio n a n d r e ­ search in this century will demand a complex, integrated, and increas­ ingly flexible library. As Lizabeth A. Wilson the next director o f the libraries, I am excited about shaping the li­ brary o f the future for the university o f the future.” Wilson was on e o f the creators o f the award-winning UWired project, a collabo­ ration that has helped educators and students incorporate technology and information lit­ eracy into teaching and learning. She also lead the Web initiative at the Libraries, which resulted in the creation o f the Information Gateway. In addition to her position at UW, Wilson has served as executive director of the Cicognara Library Program since 1988, which is an international collaboration o f the University o f Illinois, the Vatican Libraiy, and the Samuel Kress Foundation. She has pub­ lished widely on information literacy; teach­ ing, learning, and technology; educational col­ laborations; and assessm ent and evaluation o f library services. Wilson is a m em ber o f the Board o f Trustees o f OCLC and she has held numerous leadership positions in the ALA, including her current position as presi­ dent o f ACRL. Michael Frederick Alexander has b een appointed the first director o f the Digital Li­ brary Program at the New York Public Li­ brary. Anne Armstrong is now a resident li­ brarian in the reference department at the University o f Illinois at Chicago. Dan Barkey has b e e n appointed head of systems at the Health Sciences Libraries at the University o f W isconsin at Madison. Martha Bedard is the new associate dean and director o f the Medical Sciences Library at Texas A&M University. Wilson has retired as public services librarian at the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles campus library. D e a t h s Madhavarao “Bali” Balachandran, 62, fac­ ulty member at the University of Illinois Li­ brary at Urbana-Champaign from 1972 to 1999 and head of the Commerce Library for 17 years, died September 29. He also served as coordi­ nator o f the Library-wide Social Sciences Divi­ sion from 1985 to 1996. During his career, he authored, compiled, or edited seven major reference books covering the fields of regional and local business and economic statistics; busi­ ness information sources in trade, banking, fi­ nance, and European business; indexes to re­ views and guides to reference books; and a series of bibliographic guides identifying a core collection for academic business libraries. Ilona Siren Caparros, former reference team leader at the Alexander Library and a member of the Rutgers University Libraries, died at her home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, shortly after starting her sabbatical leave. Caparros began her career at Rutgers in April 1973 as technical services librarian and subsequently served as microforms librarian from 1980 to 1989, when she joined Information Services at Alexander Library. Prior to joining Rutgers, Caparros worked at Widener Library at Harvard Univer­ sity, Plymouth State College Library, and at Newark State College (now Kean) Library. Neal Harlow, 92, former director of libraries at the University of British Columbia and dean o f the Graduate School of Library Service at Rutgers University, has died. During his ten­ ure as dean, Harlow planned a new building for the library school. Upon his retirement in 1969, he set to woi'k on researching the his­ tory and early maps of California’s coastal cit­ ies and published five books. His last book was a translation of Auguste Duhout-Cilly’s A Voyage to California, the Sandwich Islands, and Around the World in the Yeaι~s 1826-1829, which was published by the University of Cali­ fornia Press in 1999.
