ICPC distributes 
booklet on flood 
recovery
The Iowa Cooperative Pres­
ervation Consortium (ICPC) 
has compiled a Flood Recov­
ery Booklet using leaflets con­
tributed by the American In­
stitute for Conservation o f 
Historic and Artistic Works, 
the American Red Cross, the 
Federation o f Historical Ser­
vices, the Northeast Docu­
ment Conservation Center, 
and a number o f other orga­
nizations. The booklet is designed to help the 
general public cope with flood water damage 
and covers the issues o f safety, dealing with 
mold, treating damaged materials, and where 
to obtain help when it’s needed. The ICPC and 
the Iowa Department o f Cultural Affairs, with 
the h elp  o f  funds p ro v id e d  through the 
Chairman's Emergency Grant Program o f the 
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), 
have already distributed over 2,000 copies o f 
the booklet.

Copies may be purchased for $10.00 pre­
paid (plus 50<t tax, if not tax-exempt) from the 
Iowa State Printing Division, Publications Divi­
sion, Grimes State Office Building, Des Moines, 
IA 50319. Please allow four to six weeks for 
delivery.

SC State Library publishes guide for 
library building
The South Carolina State Library has published 
Preservation Concerns and Remodeling o f  Li­
braries: Planning f o r  Preservation, an aid to 
incorporating preservation needs into library 
building maintenance, renovation, and construc­
tion. Written by Michael Trinkley, director o f 
the Chicora Foundation, and funded by a Li­
brary Services and Construction Act (LSCA) 
grant, this publication is intended to provide 
basic information for librarians w ho lack pres­
ervation expertise. Am ong the topics it covers 
are site selection, building design, electricity, 
plumbing, environmental control, and fire pro­
tection.

RLG launches digital 
im age project for 
photographs
T h e  R esearch  L ib ra ries 
Group (RLG) has begun a 
one-year project to investi­
gate the suitability o f digi­
tal im age tech n ology for 
managing access to photo­
graphic collections. Eight 
RLG institutions w ill work 
with Stokes Imaging Ser­
vices o f Austin, Texas, to 
digitize 8,000 photographs 
and create im age-access 

software. They will utilize the latest available 
technology to digitize images quickly and in­
expensively, but at resolutions adequate for 
research or printing reference copies. They will 
also develop databases, image bases, and soft­
ware capable o f searching, retrieving, and dis­
playing the images.

The Commission makes publications 
available online
The Commission on Preservation and Access 
has announced that it w ill make its publica­
tions available in electronic form to the Asso­
ciation for Managing and Using Information 
Technology in Higher Education. It will include 
them in the CAUSE Exchange Library and make 
them accessible through a gopher.
