It places special emphasis on planning, covering hurricane-resistant building design, a n d retrofitting structures to im prove h u rri­ cane resistance. This revised version of die 1998 original in English, incorporates a new introduction by Hilda Abreu de Utermöhlen, conservator at the Centro Cultural Eduardo León Jimenes Santiago in the Dominican Republic, and an appendix specifically about Caribbean building structures written by Maria Gonzalez, a doctoral student in the School of Information at the University of Texas-Austin. IFLA preconference The Preseivation and Conservation Section o f the Federation o f Library Associations and In­ stitutions (IFLA) will h o ld a tw o-and-a-half- day conference, Preparing for the Worst, Plan­ ning for the Best: Protecting ou r Cultural Heri­ tage from Disaster, July 30 to A ugust 1, 2003, in Berlin, G erm any (before the start o f IFLA’s annual conference). The program is intended to help library and archives administrators pre­ pare for and recover books, paper, photographs, film, tape, and discs from both natural and man- made disasters. It will cover national policy plan­ ning, plans in action, lessons learned, priorities for salvage, and new recovery technologies. Registration fees have not been announced as o f this writing.
