Ching-chih Chen, profes­ sor in the Graduate School o f Library and Information Science at Simmons College, has been appointed to President Clinton’s 20- member Advisoiy Committee on High-Perfor m ance Computing and Communications, Infor­ mation Technology, and the Next Generation In­ ternet. Tyson, state li­ brarian of Virginia from 1990-1994, died in No­ vember after a brief ill­ ness. He was 44. At the time of his death, Tyson was an associate pro­ fessor at the Graduate School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knox­ ville. He also was president of Jo hn Tyson and Associates, a library management con­ sulting firm specializing in human resource developm ent. B efore his appointm ent as Virginia’s state librarian, Tyson served as uni­ versity librarian at the University of Richmond (1986-1990), and associate professor and as­ sistant director for planning, administration, and development at Northern Illinois Univer­ sity (1984-1986). A pas­ sionate supporter of the library profession, Ty­ son was a force behind th e c r e a tio n o f th e Black Caucus o f ALA (BCALA). Retirem ents Indy Bhugra, Indic languages and law mate­ rials cataloger at the University of British Co­ lumbia, recently retired after more than 24 years of service. Jo an n e R. Euster, university librarian at the University o f California, Irvine, will retire Sep tember 1 after five years in that position. Euster joined UCI in 1992 after serving as vice-president for university libraries at Rutgers University. B e ­ fore that she served as library director at San Francisco State Univer­ sity (1 9 8 0 – 86) and as university librarian at Loyola University in New Jo ann e R. Euster Orleans (1977– 80). Ac­ tive professionally, Euster served as president of ACRL in 1986– 87 and as chair of the ACRL 7th National Conference Executive Committee. Marta G. Franco recently retired as head of the Serials Section at York College. Herbert Z. Knobler recently retired as head of reference and bibliographic instruction at York College after 25 years of service. Julie Stevens, undergraduate services coordi­ nator in the Main Library at the University of British Columbia (UBC), recently retired after 25 years of service. Stevens joined UBC as a reference librarian in Sedgewick Library then worked in the Humanities Division from 1975 to 1977. She also served there as acting assis­ tant head o f Sedgewick Library and head of the Information and Orientation Division. Deaths Howard Merle Teeple, 85, former Northwest­ ern University (NU) librarian, died in January. Teeple was head librarian at NU from 1963 to 1969. He then served as head o f the Reference Department at Chicago State University until 1977. After he retired, he founded the Religion and Ethics Institute and wrote six books in­ cluding The Historical A pproach to the Bible. ■ May 1997 / 357
