To Attend Conference Programs, ACRL Board Meetings, or Com­
mittee Meetings

For information on times, places, and general program content, 
consult C &RL News, American Libraries, and the official conference 
programs and schedules. F o r additional inform ation, contact the 
ACRL office.

To Attend Preconference Institutes
For information about time, place, and preconference theme, check 

C&RL News and American Libraries. For additional information and 
registration materials, write to the ACRL office.

To Establish a Local Chapter of ACRL
Check the procedures listed in “Guidelines for ACRL Chapters” 

(available from the ACRL office). Send a petition with the signatures 
of at least twenty-five ACRL members to the ACRL office for approval 
by the Board of Directors.

To Serve on ACRL’s Committees or to Participate in ACRL’s Sec­
tions and Discussion Groups

Familiarize yourself with the work of the unit— check the ALA 
Handbook o f Organization for the unit’s statement of responsibility, 
read about the work of the unit as reported in C &RL News and 
American Libraries, attend the meetings of the unit during ALA con­
ferences. Submit a completed ACRL committee volunteer form (pub­
lished in the November issue of C &RL News and available at ALA 
conferences). Communicate your interest to the ACRL Appointments 
and Nominations Committee, to any of the ACRL officers, to the chair 
of an ACRL unit whose work interests you, or to the ACRL office.

w ill s p o n s o r  a p r o g ra m  e n t i t l e d ,  “ P e rio d ic a l 
Selection in C ollege Libraries: R eports of Prac­
titio n e rs” at th e  1983 A nnual C o nferen ce of th e 
A m e ric a n  L ib ra r y  A sso c ia tio n . T h e  tw o -h o u r 
program  will offer th re e  or four p rese n ta tio n s on 
th e  ex p erien ces th a t college librarians have had 
in periodical selection.

T h e p ap ers should focus on a n d  analyze p e ri­
odical selectio n  in college lib ra rie s or d escrib e 
special collection d e v e lo p m e n t activities such as 
m an ag em en t inform ation system s, use and u ser 
studies, faculty inv o lv em en t in jo u rn a l selection, 
citation analysis as a collection d e v e lo p m e n t tool, 
o r se le c tio n  c rite ria . T h e  p re s e n ta tio n s  sho u ld  
e m p h a s iz e  w h a t m a k e s  p e r i o d i c a l  s e le c ti o n  
p o lic ie s/p ro c e d u re s/m e th o d o lo g ie s successful or 
tre a t th e  special p ro b lem s associated w ith p e ri­
odical selection in college libraries.

T he Illinois State L ibrary has aw ard ed  a con­
tract to th e  L ibrary R esearch C e n te r of th e  U ni­
v ersity of Illinois G ra d u ate  School of L ib rary  and 
Inform ation Science for a survey of lib rary  service 
in Illinois correctional in stitu tio n s.

T he Illinois State L ibrary in cooperation w ith 
th e  S ta te  D e p a r t m e n t  o f C o r r e c tio n s  h as d e ­
v elo p ed one o f th e  larg est program s of prison li­
b r a r y  se rv ic e  in  th e  U n ite d  S ta te s. T h e  m ain  
p u rp o se of this survey is to identify th e  p ro b lem  
areas w hich have d e v elo p e d  and to co n sid er pos­
sible solutions for each.

T h e prin cip al inv estig ato r for th e  stu d y  will be 
R hea J. R ubin, a nationally know n e x p e rt in this 
field. She will b e  assisted by A nn P u ck ett, on th e 
staff of th e  S o u th ern  Illinois U n iversity  Law Li­
b rary , and by H e r b e r t G oldhor, D ire c to r of th e  
L ibrary R esearch C e n te r of th e  U niversity of Illi­
nois. T h ey  will b e  g u id ed  by an advisory co m m it­
te e  o f six persons. T h e study will take a year and 
will resu lt in a p u b lish e d  rep o rt. ■ ■
