C a r l J a c k s o n , form er dean of university li­ braries at Indiana University, is presum ed dead after having been lost at sea off the coast of Spain in May 1981. Having sailed his yacht, the “Carla M ia,’’ to Ireland in 1978, he was attem pting to recross the Atlantic. Jackson received his MLS in 1952 from Florida State University. H e held positions of increasing responsibility in the libraries of the University of Tennessee, Iowa State University, th e University of Iowa, th e U niversity of M innesota, and th e University of Colorado before becom ing director of libraries at Pennsylvania State U niversity in 1966. On January 1, 1973, he becam e dean of university libraries at Indiana University, a posi­ tion he relinquished on June 30, 1980, to allow more tim e for writing, research, and teaching. Jackson m ade significant contributions to the library profession d u rin g his career. H e was a le a d e r in th e fo u n d in g o f M A R L IN an d M ID LN E T, and he led the national effort to d e ­ velop the Cataloging-in-Publication program now operated by the Library of Congress. H e served th e A m e ric an L ib ra ry A sso ciatio n in se v e ra l capacities— as chair of many com m ittees, as p res­ id e n t of th e R esources and T echnical Services Division, and as a m em ber of ALA Council.
