This award, given by the Georgia Library Asso­ ciation, honors a prac­ ticing librarian who has made substantial contri­ W i l li a m G r a y P o t t e r butions to the library p r o fe s s io n , s u ch as stimulation of library development, leadership in library programs, unusual and imaginative services, or outstanding support o f Georgia’s libraries. Potter served as chair of the Univer­ sity System o f Georgia Regents Academic Committee on Libraries and spearheaded the initial proposal to share electronic databases between the academic, public, technical, and school libraries in the state. “This was the seed from which GALILEO sprang,” said Rebecca Ziegler, chair o f the awards commit­ tee. “He also authored the ‘white paper’ seek­ ing funding for the second phase o f the GALILEO project, which will result in an in­ tegrated library system for the 34 university system libraries in Georgia enabling coop­ erative collection development, borrowing, and interlibrary loans, so that they will virtu­ ally function as one library.” Earlier this year, Potter received the 1998 Blackwell’s Scholar­ ship Award from the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services for an ar­ ticle on library consortia. Bodi worked as North Park’s interim director o f the library, head reference librarian, and chair of the division of humanities. Prior to her work at North Park, Bodi served as librarian at the Wilmette Public Library and at Kendall Col­ lege. In 1998, Bodi, a member of the Beta Phi Mu National Library Science Honor Fraternity, won the Best Research Paper Award at the spring 1998 Conference of the Illinois ACRL. She also was recognized by the ALA for writ­ ing one of the top 20 articles on bibliographic instruction published in 1995. Kathryn H. Carpenter has been appointed director o f library services at Purdue Univer­ sity Calumet. She previously served as uni­ versity librarian at Valparaiso University library. She also held several positions at the Univer­ sity o f Illinois at Chi­ cago, including acting head of regional sites, bibliograph er for the health sciences, associ­ ate professor, acquisi­ tions librarian, interli­ brary loan librarian, and d ocu m en ts librarian. Last spring she was elected to the membership advisory council of INCOLSA to represent members in the northwest Indiana region. Carpenter has authored numerous scholarly publications and she wrote the book Sourcebook on Parenting a n d Child Care, published in 1995. She has been a reviewer for Booklist for: seven years. Giuse, has been appointed direc­ tor o f the Eskind B iom edical Library at Vanderbilt University. Maryhelen Jones has been appointed direc­ tor of the Fogelson Library at the College of Santa Fe. Jones comes from Central Michigan University in Mt. She has held nu­ merous appointments with the ACRL Distance Learning Section and is M aryhelen Jones currently DLS Discus­ sion Group chair. Lawrence Woods is now the director of health sciences and information technology at the University o f Iowa in Iowa City. R e t i r e m e n t s Carolyn L. Robison, associate university li­ brarian at Georgia State University, has re­ tired after 31 years of service. An active mem­ ber o f ALA, ACRL, the Georgia Library Asso­ ciation, and the Southeastern Library Asso­ ciation, Robison has served on numerous professional committees and task forces and has been a frequent Library Evaluator and Reaffirmation Committee member for the Southern Association o f Colleges and Schools. Most recently she chaired the Membership Committee o f the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET); the GALILEO Assessment Committee; and the COPERNICUS (G2) Assessment Committee, which will implement statewide library bor­ rowing throughout Georgia. D e a t h s Richard Hoover, retired librarian at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died in August. He retired in March after almost 30 years in the Rutgers Libraries, the major part of his career spent at its Library of Science and Medicine. Hoover received a bachelor’s from the University of Hartford and his MLS from Rutgers in 1965. Francis A. Johns, university bibliographer (1958-79) and later research bibliographer from 1979 until his retirement in 1998 at the Rutgers University Libraries in New Brunswick, New Jersey, died on August 4 at the age of 75. After extended service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he became a Fellow of the Li­ brary Association. He held various library po­ sitions in Great Britain and Canada from 1948 until coming to the United States and Rutgers in 1955. He earned a bachelor’s in French and an MLS and master’s in French literature from Rutgers. During his tenure at Rutgers, he was responsible for substantial enhancement in the scope, size, and quality of the library’s collec­ tions. Johns was an expert on the noted En­ glish Sinologist and translator Arthur Waley and compiled A Bibliography o f Arthur Waley. He was a member of the Bibliographic Society of America, the Bibliosmiles, the Grolier Club, and the Oriental Ceramic Society.
