Sometimes it works L ast spring all of th e academ ic program s, in ­ c lu d in g th e lib r a r ie s , on th e U n iv e rsity of M issouri-Colum bia C am pus w ere asked by the adm inistration to do an extensive self-study of th e ir efficiency, effectiveness, centrality to the mission of th e cam pus, and need for additional resources. T he libraries’ self-study considered th eir statistics and rank am ong other research libraries, th e strengths of th eir collections, col­ lection grow th, new technology in th e libraries, lib rary functions and services, staff, facilities, and budget and operations. T he conclusion reached is com m on to m any research libraries these days— UMC could no longer afford to satisfy th e ir users’ research needs solely from their ow n collections and, due to an increasing academ ic need for new infor­ m ation technologies, w ould need to expand its docum ent delivery, netw ork p articip atio n , and telecom m unications capability. As a result of the libraries’ program review, in July th e cam pus-w ide faculty review com ­ m ittee placed Missouri’s lib rary system at the top of its enhancem ents list w ith a recom m en­ dation th a t its budget be increased by $1.1 m il­ lion annually. O th e r a c a d e m ic d e p a r tm e n ts , in c lu d in g journalism , m athem atics, biological sciences, h isto ry , a n d a c a m p u s-w id e c o m p u te r an d w ritin g p ro g ram , w ere also slated for enhance­ m ents as funds becam e available.
