Baker has served as vice-president and presid en t of the AJL’s Re­ search and Special Libraries Division, and has been pres­ ident-elect of the association since 1992. He will serve as president until June 1996. J o h n V. R ic h a r d so n , associate professor at the University of Califor­ nia, Los Angeles, School of Education and Infor­ mation Studies, has been appointed editor of the Library Quarterly, and w ill serve a five-year term. The author of eight books and many articles and reviews, Richardson h a s r e f e r e e d s e v e ra l journals including the John V. Richardson Journal o f A pplied Com­ m unication Research and the Journal o f Edu­ cation f o r Library a n d Inform ation Science. E u g en e B. P o w e r has been honored by ALA with a memorial resolution for distinguished achievements during the course of his lifetime. Power, w ho founded Ann Arbor-based UMI in 1938, died in December 1993 at age 88. The resolution points to Pow er’s role as founder of the m odem microfilming industry and his com­ mitment to the availability of important texts. Beatty began his career at the Library o f the College o f Physicians in Phil­ adelphia, then becam e librarian of the Medical School Library at the University of Missouri. He is the coauthor o f five books and the author of over 170 articles. K a th e r in e B e ie r s has retired as assistant uni­ versity librarian for personnel at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Pat B u sh , m anagem ent bibliographer at North­ w estern University (NU) Library, retired in June. Bush began serving at NU in 1951 as reference librarian, then becam e assistant librarian in 1955. In 1972 she becam e h ead of the M anagement Library, then head o f m anagem ent services in 1976, and m anagem ent bibliographer in 1991. Active in ACRL, he has served on the Editorial Board o f C&KL News. J erry J a m e s has retired as humanities bibliog rapher at the University o f California, Sant Cruz. Lamont has served a curator of the William Stanley Hoole Specia Collection Library since 1975. Since she began working at the university in 1954, she has serve in reference, circulation, and acquisitions. On of the four founders of the Society of Alabam Archivists, Lamont has served on the Executiv Board and as vice-president and president. M a rio n T a y lo r has retired as head of collec­ tion planning at the University of California, Santa Cruz. D e a th s H a n s Bart, former head of the Catalog Depart­ ment at the University of Arizona (AZU), Tuc­ son, died last spring. Bart left AZU in the 1970s to take over the Arizona State Museum’s Library and retired from there in the late ’80s. D o u g la s W. B ryant, director of the Harvard University Library emeritus, died in June at the age of 80. Bryant w orked as a librarian at the University of Michigan, the Detroit Public Li­ brary, and the Burton History Library before World War II. After the war, he becam e assis­ tant librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently served as attaché to the American Embassy in London, w here he was director of libraries in the U.S. Information Service. Joining Harvard in 1952, Bryant served there as administrative assistant librarian, asso­ ciate director of the University Library, univer­ sity librarian, and director o f the university li­ brary. He w as a cofounder of the Research Libraries Group and helped establish the Na­ tional Union Catalog of U.S. publications. G uy R ed v ers Lyle, former director of libraries at Emory University until his retirement in 1972, died July 20 at the age of 87. Lyle had a long and distinguished career in librarianship, serving as head of the library at Antioch College; associ­ ate in library economy at the University of Illi­ nois; lib ra ria n o f th e W oman’s College of the U n iv e rs ity o f N o rth Carolina, G reensboro; and director of libraries at Louisiana State Uni­ Guy Lyle versity. He joined Emory in 1954. Active in professional organizations, Lyle served on ACRL’s Board (1950-1953) and as president of ACRL (1954—1955). He was the author o f m any articles and essays, and the books Classified List o f Periodicals f o r the Col­ lege Library (1934), College Library Publicity (1935), and The Adm inistration o f the College Library (1944). A rc h e r S im s J a c k s o n , former head of the Cat­ alog D epartm ent at Trinity College Library in Hartford, Connecticut, died in August at the age of 86. A graduate o f Alabama College for Women, Jackson received her MLS from Emory University. She retired in 1973. G erh ard B ran d t N a ese th , former associate di­ rector of the General Library System at the Uni­ versity of Wisconsin-Madison, died June 10 at the age of 81. Naeseth w orked for the Univer­ sity of Michigan Libraries from 1934 to 1940, and as associate librarian at Oklahoma State University from 1940 to 1948. He w orked for the UW-Madison libraries for 30 years until 1978, w hen he retired. Since then he administered th e V esterh eim G e n e a lo g ic a l C e n te r an d Naeseth Library, w hich he founded. R o b ert V o sp e r, former university librarian at the University of California (UC), Los Angeles, died in May at the age of 80. Vosper began his career as a librarian at UC-Berkeley in 1940, worked in the Reference Department at Stanford University, becam e head o f the Department of Acquisitions at UCLA in 1944, and served as UCLA’s first assistant librarian and first associ­ ate librarian.
