Rare Books and Manuscripts Preconference The Twenty-Sixth ACRL Rare Books and M an­ uscripts Preconference, “C hanging Concepts of Value and R arity,” will be held July 2-5, 1985, at the Holiday In n –M art Plaza, in Chicago, Illinois. The preconference will focus on problems and is­ sues raised by the changing concepts of value and rarity as they apply to library collections. Speakers will examine various aspects of the question of how contem porary culture has evolved its perception of w hat constitutes “rarity” and how society relates rarity to value. The range of discussion will involve consider­ ation of such questions as the historical evolution of the idea of rarity and the influence on the concept of such social and cultural factors as the develop­ m ent of the modern university system, the con­ sumer society, ideas of status and prestige, and the political statements th at rare book collections can make. Scheduled speakers are: A rthur F reem an, of Bernard Q uaritch, L td., with a retrospective view of the English market; Paul Mosher, director of re­ search services at Stanford University Library, on aspects of collection developm ent; Kenneth W. Rendell, m anuscript dealer and appraiser, w ith an appraiser’s view of the market; Robert Rosenthal, curator of Special Collections at the University of Chicago, on the origins of the Chicago book world; James M. Wells, custodian emeritus of the John M. W ing Foundation on the History of Printing at the Newberry Library, on the role of exhibitions in rea­ wakening interest in books; and Thomas W right, William Andrews Clark L ibrarian at UCLA, on li­ brarians’ curious views on their roles and their col­ ections. The RBMS C ontinuing Education Committee has also planned a variety of sessions intended to encourage preconference participation. Topics will include: design and renovation of special col­ lection facilities; m anuscript valuations and ap­ praisals; the Tax Reform Act of 1984 and charita­ ble contributions; RLIN im plem entation of the MARC archives and the MSS control form at; rare book librarians as collectors; rare book reading rooms; special collections in the general collections environment; using volunteers and docents in rare book libraries; and conservation planning. The preconference dinner will be the special Fourth of July chicken and ribs dinner dance at the University of Chicago, hosted by Robert Rosen­ thal. This event is included in the registration fee. All registrants are invited to the preconference o p en in g re c e p tio n sponsored by th e M idw est C hapter of the American A ntiquarian Booksellers Association and Northwestern University Library at the preconference hotel. Preconference registration is limited to the first 250 applicants. The registration fee of $110 for ACRL members, $135 for non-members, should be sent in by June 3. Late registrations will be ac­ cepted on a space available basis after June 3 at an additional cost of $15 per person. Interlibrary loan workshop The Center for Research Libraries will spon­ sor an on-site interlibrary loan workshop on Friday, July 5, in conjunction w ith ALA An­ nual Conference. The workshop will be con­ ducted by Linda N aru, head of circulation at the Center. The session is designed to provide hands-on instruction in accessing the C enter’s collections more effectively and efficiently, and is intended prim arily for personnel from the C enter’s m em ­ ber institutions. A bus has been chartered to sh u ttle w orkshop p a rtic ip a n ts betw een the Palm er House and the Center. Lunch will be provided, along w ith tours of both the Ken­ wood and C ottage Grove facilities. The bus will leave the Palm er House at 9:00 a.m . and return at approximately 3:30 p.m .
