Hert, assistant pro­ fessor at the Indiana Univer­ sity School o f Library and Information Science, was the winner o f the American So­ ciety for Information Science (ASIS) 1995 Doctoral Forum Award presented in October. Hert’s research, “Exploring a N ew M odel for the Under­ standing o f Information Re­ trieval In teraction s,” was chosen for its importance to in fo rm a tio n scien ce, the quality o f its literature re­ view, the appropriateness and soundness o f the research methodology, its analysis o f results and conclusions, and its clarity o f presentation. Toni Olshen, associate university librarian at York University, was named by the Associa­ tion o f Research Libraries (ARL) as visiting pro­ gram officer with its Diversity Program. Olshen w ill concentrate her research on diversity is­ sues in both large academic and public librar­ ies in Canada. Beginning in Novem ber 1995 and going through May 1996, she w ill work with Kriza Jennings, ARL’s program officer for diversity and minority recruitment, to incorpo­ rate the Canadian research library perspective into ARL’s program. A p p o in tm e n ts Shirley K. Baker, dean o f University Libraries at Washington University (W U ) in St. Louis, has been appointed to the newly created position o f vice-chancellor for infor­ m ation te c h n o lo g y at WU, as she continues in her p ositio n as dean, which she has held since 1989. In her new post, Baker will have respon­ sibility for planning and Shirley Baker coordinating the elabora­ tion o f the information infrastructure at WU. She previously served as associate director o f libraries for public services at MIT, and as a librarian at Johns Hopkins University and Northwestern Univer­ sity. C h risto p h e r M illson - Martula has been named director o f the library at Lynchburg College’s Knight- Capron Library. M illson- Martula join s Lynchburg from Arizona State Univer­ sity West, where he served as assistant director for ad­ ministrative services and associate librarian. Cerise Oberman, director o f libraries at the State University o f N ew York at Plattsburgh, has been named dean o f library and information services, and her respon­ sibilities have been ex­ panded to encom pass computing systems and support services. Accord­ ing to E. Thomas Moran, vice-president for aca­ demic affairs, the promo­ tion will allow the col­ lege to take advantage o f Cerise Oberman O berm an ’s “extraordi­ nary talent and leadership qualities” to com­ bine library and computing resources for “maxi­ mum efficiency and effectiveness.” Jay Starratt, director o f technical and automa­ tion services at Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale, has been named dean o f Lovejoy Library at SIU at Ed- wardsville. Starratt has been at SIU-Carbondale since 1987, serving first as assistant director o f li­ brary services. B efo re that he served as assis­ tant director for admin­ istrative services and chair o f the Circulation Jay Starratt Services Department at the University o f Nebraska at Omaha. He re­ ceived his MLS from Emory University. January 1996/49 Larry E. Sullivan has been named chief librar­ ian at John Jay College o f Criminal Justice in N ew York City. He formerly served as chief o f the Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library o f Congress, and, before that, as chief librarian at Lehman College. Connie Capers Thorson has been appointed director o f the Pelletier Library at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Before join­ ing Allegheny, Thorson w orked at the Univer­ sity o f N ew M exico General Library in Albu­ querque for 16 years, serving first as head o f acquisitions and then as head o f reference. A member o f ALA, ACRL, the Modern Language Association, and the American Society for Eigh­ teenth-Century Studies, Thorson received, in 1994, the first Lifetime Achievem ent Aw ard given by the South Central Society for Eigh­ teenth-Century Studies. Ann J. Wolpert, executive director o f library and information services at the Harvard Busi­ ness School, has been appointed director o f the Massachusetts Institute o f Technology (M IT) Libraries. W olpert joined Harvard in 1992 after 16 years at Arthur D. Little (AD L), Inc., serving as technical information specialist, manager o f the Research Library, and director o f the Cam­ bridge Information Center. She also was an ADL consultant in library planning, publishing, and information technology from 1982 to 1992. From 1967 to 1976 she served as the librarian at the Boston Redevelopm ent Authority. Mary Anthes has been named science li­ brarian at Wichita State University. Therese Baker recently became interlibrary loan librarian at Western Kentucky University. Judy Bowen is the new reference librarian at Prestonsburg Community College, Kentucky. Jean Brunsdale has joined the General Ref­ erence and Documents Department at Illinois State University, Normal. Sue Burch has been named assistant direc­ tor/administrative librarian at the University o f Kentucky Law Library. Frederick Burchsted has been appointed reference librarian in Harvard University’s Wid- ener Library. Jo Burgess recently became assistant librar­ ian, assistant head o f preservation, and head o f the Conservation Section in the Preservation Department at Indiana University-Bloomington. Beverly Carver is the new head o f elec­ tronic resources and reference services at the University o f Texas at San Antonio. Beau David Case is now classics, German, linguistics, and Romance languages librarian at O hio State University. Juliet Casper is the new assistant librarian, electronic services and reference librarian in the Law Library at Indiana University-Bloom­ ington. Dig Chinn has joined the staff at the Bib­ liographic Center for Research in Aurora, C olo­ rado, as project manager o f cataloging services. Mary-Beth Clark is now information ac­ cess librarian at the International University o f Japan. Leslie Conniff is the new project archivist in the University Archives and Records Center at the University o f Louisville, Kentucky. Maynard Brichford has retired as university archivist at the University o f Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. January 1996/51 Hans Burndorfer retired at the end o f D e­ cember from the University o f British Colum­ bia (UBC). Burndorfer began as a reference li­ brarian at UBC in 1964, then was appointed the library system’s first official bibliographer in 1965. He became head o f the Music Library in 1967, and later added new responsibilities as head o f the Fine Arts Division (1985), Maps, and Special Collections and Archives (1992). Diane Carothers has retired as head o f the Communications Library at the University o f Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. George Crabb retired in September after a 30- year career at Eastern Kentucky University as section chief o f cataloging and reference. Norma Jean Gibson, reference librarian at the University o f Kentucky, retired in July. Glenn Gritzmacher has retired as education librarian at Illinois State University. George N. Hartje retired in August after 31 years as director o f libraries and head o f the Division o f Libraries and Museums at North­ east Missouri State University. A 1950 graduate of the University o f Illinois Graduate Library School, Hartje w orked at the University o f Illi­ nois, Washington University, and St. Louis Public Library befo re join ing Northeast. An active member o f ALA committees, he also served as president o f the Missouri Association o f Col­ lege and Research Libraries and the Missouri Library Association. June Martin, coordinator o f public services at Eastern Kentucky University, retired last spring after 24 years o f service. Margaret Myers, director o f ALA’s Office for Library Personnel Resources, retired in O cto­ ber after 21 years o f service. In Novem ber she left for a two-year Peace Corps assignment in Botswana, where she w ill help develop com ­ munity libraries. Lois Schneider has retired as head o f infor­ mation services at Queens College, N ew York. Sara Scott retired in July after 20 years as hu­ manities catalog librarian at Western Kentucky University. Raman Venkataraman retired at the end o f December from the University o f British Co­ lum bia (U B C ) a fter 20 yea rs o f service. Venkataraman joined the Science and Engineer­ ing Division at UBC Libraries in 1975, shortly after receiving his MLS from the University o f Western Ontario. D e a th s Edward H. Baldridge, head cataloger at Mi­ ami-Dade Community College, died October 28, 1995, at the age o f 51. Baldridge joined Miami-Dade in 1989 fo llo w in g service with Manatee Community College, Charlotte-Glades Library System, and the Free Library o f Phila­ delphia. A member o f ALA and ACRL, Baldridge most recently served on the Community and Junior College Libraries Section’s Library Re­ sources Review Committee. Goldia Hester, reference librarian and classics and archaeology bibliographer at the Univer­ sity o f Texas at Austin (U TA ), died at the end o f August. Her career with the U TA General Libraries spanned 30 years. She received the General Libraries Librarian Excellence Award in 1982. ■
