A c q u i s i t i o n s The jo u rn als o f M ichael McClure— poet, essayist, a nd playw right— have been acquired by the U niversity o f California-Berkeley. M cC lure, now 70, was on stage at T h e Six Gallery in San Francisco in O c to b er 1955 w hen Allen G insberg unleashed his first public reading o f “H o w l.” M cC lure has published 16 books o f poetry, two novels, six books o f essays, ten plays, a nd his essays have appeared in Rolling Ston e and Vanity Fair. H e has had feature roles in several films and has collaborated w ith m usician Ray M anzarek, o f the D oors a nd Jim M orrison fame, for live poetry readings set to m usic and to produce a jazzy perform ance video, “Love L ion.” M a r v in J. M ille r , fo r m e r h e a d o f th e Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), has donated his papers to N ew York University. T he papers docum ent his tenure at MLBPA, and include correspondence, legal papers, photographs, videos, a nd artifacts, such as com m emorative bats and baseballs. M iller, k now n especially for establishing the concept o f free agency that allows players to move from team to team, was elected head o f M LB PA in 1966. Free agency resulted in a h undredfold increase in the highest salaries, but M iller also achieved for the players the right to a rbitration, the right to veto trades for veteran players, a vastly im proved pension plan, and the right to bargain collectively. In 1982, he stepped dow n as u nion head and has since captured his experiences in the book A Whole Different Ball Game: The Sport a n d Business o f Baseball. F ilm m a k e r James Iv o ry has d o n a te d a large collection o f his papers to the U niversity of O regon Libraries. Ivory, a 1951 graduate o f the U niversity o f O regon, began his film m aking ca­ reer in 1957 w ith the m aking o f “Venice: T hem e a n d V ariations,” w hich was his m aster’s thesis p roject at the U niversity o f S outhern California film school. In 1961, he form ed a partnership w ith p ro d u c e r Ism ail M e rc h a n t a n d novelist- screenw riter R u th Praw er Jhabvala th a t led to the form ation o f the p ro d u c tio n com pany M er­ c hant Ivory, w hich has released nearly 40 films earning 30 A cadem y Award nom inations. Ivory’s tw o m ost famous films, “A R oom w ith a View” (1985) and “H ow ards E n d ” (1992), each w on th ree A cadem y Aw ards. T h e 26 boxes o f d o ­ n a te d papers c o n ta in p ro d u c tio n files, screen­ plays, photographs, correspondence w ith actors a nd actresses, film m aking notebooks, press kits, movie reviews, costum e samples, and oth er film - related docum ents. D a tin g from 1947 to 1992, the m aterial includes some o f Ivory’s class papers from the U niversity o f O regon, along w ith let­ ters to his family a nd o ther personal correspon­ dence.
