H artsook began his professional career in 1979 as an archivist at the S outh C a ro lin a D e p a rt­ m en t o f Archives, joined th e s ta f f o f th e S o u th C a ro lin ia n a L ib ra ry in 1983 as curator o f m anu­ scripts, a n d becam e the library’s curator o f m od­ ern political collections in 1991. Paula Lenor Webb has joined the Roberts- LaForge Library at Delta State University as seri­ als/interlibrary loan librarian. Jim Wilson, one o f the founding partners of Dynix, has returned to the company to serve as senior library advisor. R e t i r e m e n t s Allan J. Dyson has retired from the University o f California-Santa Cruz (UCSC), after 24 years o f service as university librarian. Dyson guided a substantial growth in collection and staff size, as the campus doubled in enrollment during his ten­ ure. H e oversaw the construction o f the ALA/ ALA award-winning Science and Engineering Li­ brary, and has successfully lobbied for a $74-million project to expand and renovate the main li­ brary, formal planning for which will begin this year. H e is responsible for a num ber o f innovative services, including organizing one o f the first aca­ demic library multicultural outreach programs, and he started the library’s subject endowm ent pro­ gram, which has raised more than $2 million for library collections in the past decade. Dyson joined U C S C after eight years as the director o f the M offìtt Undergraduate Library at U C Berkeley, during which time he was elected president of the Librarians Association o f the University o f Cali­ fornia. Dyson chaired the Editorial Advisory Board o f American Libraries, edited C&RL News, served as chair o f the Editorial Board o f Choice maga­ zine, chaired committees within LAMA’s Fund- Raising and Financial Development Section, and chaired the ALA Publishing Com m ittees Grants Subcommittee. Ruth K. Seidman, communications coordinator for the M assachusetts In stitu te o f T echnology (M IT ) Libraries, has retired. She served as head o f M I T ’s E n g in e erin g a nd Science Libraries (1988– 99) and previously held positions as direc­ tor o f the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Re­ search Library and Region I librarian for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She is the au­ thor o f the 1993 Special Libraries Association (SLA) m onograph Building Global Partnerships fo r Library Cooperation and was editor of the Haworth Press, Inc. quarterly Science & Technology Libraries (1994– 2001). Seidman was SLA president from 1990 to 1991. Allen H. Stokes Jr., after a 36-year association with the University o f South Carolina-Columbia, including 31 years as a faculty member at the South Caroliniana Library (SCL), has retired. In 1972, he began work at SCL as manuscripts librarian, moving into the position o f director in 1984. He was also named university librarian for special col­ lections in 1992, where he was responsible for SCL programs, as well as Thomas Cooper Library’s D epartm ent o f Rare Books and Special Collec­ tions and the M ap and Music Libraries. Ryoko Toyama has announced her retirement after 13 years o f leadership at the Rutgers U ni­ versity Libraries. She was appointed director of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Libraries at Rutgers in 1990 and in 1997 assumed the newly created post o f director o f the New Brunswick Libraries at Rutgers. In the new post, Toyama oversaw C&RL News ■ July/A ugust 2003 / 485 the successful integra­ tion o f 14 distinct library units into one cooperative system and the creation of a n u m b e r o f fu n c tio n al groups to coordinate sys­ tem-wide services. D uring Toyama’s tenure, the N ew Brunsw ick Libraries cre­ ated a Scholarly C o m m u ­ R yoko Toyam a nications Center, initiated a m ajor renovation o f the Douglass Library, and added instructional com ­ p u tin g labs to all the m ajor cam pus libraries. Margaret Jean Lokke, retired librarian at the University o f Illinois at Urbana-Cham pagne, died M ay 1 7 , 2003. She was first employed by the U IU C Library (1938– 39) as a student assistant in the cata­ loging departm ent. H er first professional position was as assistant binding librarian (1947-55). She also held positions in the Ulini U nion Browsing Room and as the assistant circulation librarian. In 1965 Lokke was appointed the physical education librar­ ian and was prom oted to associate professor in 1969. In 1975, her title changed to applied life studies li­ brarian. Lokke retired from the university library in 1980 w ith emeritus status. Seymour Lubetzky, p ro fesso r e m e ritu s at UCLA, has died o f heart failure at the age o f 104. Lubetzky was m ost renow ned for his prolific c on­ tributions to cataloging theory a nd his influence in the developm ent o f the “Paris Principles” and the 1967 A nglo-Am erican C ataloging Rules. In 1943 L ubetzky jo ined the Library o f Congress as a cataloger. In 1960 he became a teacher at UCLA’s newly form ed School o f Library Service, w hich becam e the G raduate School o f E d u cation and In fo rm atio n Studies. A fter retiring in 1967, he c o n tin u e d to consult on cataloging problem s and speak at national a nd in te rnational conferences. T hree o f his best-know n works, Cataloging Rules a n d Principles, Code o f Cataloging Rules, and Prin­ ciples o f Cataloging, are w idely used in library schools th ro u g h o u t the world. L ubetzky received m any honors a nd awards during his career, includ­ ing ALA’s H o n o ra ry M em bership in 2002. Leslie Troutman, form er m usic librarian at the U n iv e rs ity o f Illin o is a t U r b a n a -C h a m p a ig n (U IU C ) M u sic L ibrary, passed away in May. T routm an spent h er entire career as a m usic librar­ ian at U IU C , w here she was a p p o in te d to the library faculty in 1987. In her p osition as user ser­ vices c o o r d in a to r , she b u ilt a n a tio n a l re p u ta ­ t io n fo r th e M u s ic Library’s reference service, and she served as a m en ­ tor to dozens o f m usic li­ brarians. She held m any positions in the M usic Li­ brary A ssociation (MLA) and m ost recently com ­ pleted a term as m em ber- Leslie T ro u tm a n at-large (2000-02) on the Board o f Directors. From 1993 to 1995, she was chair o f the M L A M idw est Chapter. A t U IU C , she was serving a second term on the U niversity L ibrary Faculty Executive C o m m itte e , a nd she chaired the faculty’s P rom otion a nd Tenure Advi­ sory C om m ittee (2 0 0 0 -0 1 ). She published articles in Notes (1994, 2000), Fontesartis musicae (1995), and Music Reference Services Qitarterly (2001), as well as co n trib u tio n s to the ALA Guide to Infor­ mation Access (1994), a nd Advances in Online P ub­ lic Access Catalogs (1992). ■
