ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries January 1992 / 59 ★ ★ ★ News from the Field UT adds databases to online catalog T h e U n i v e r s it y o f T e x a s at Austin ad ded a full text version o f th e 2 0 -volum e Academ ic Am erican Encyclopedia a n d indexes to nearly 2,000 academ ic a n d b u siness p eriodicals to its on lin e catalog, UTCAT. “W e w ere looking for research resources th at w ould have broad appeal on cam pus,” said librarian Jo h n K upersm ith. “U T is a diverse place— th e encyclopedia is ideal because it covers so many subjects.” T h e new UTCAT PLU S is expected to increase use o f th e system th a t already had 525 people calling in from rem o te locations each day. Rutgers begins library expansion R u t g e r s U n i v e r s it y recently broke gro u n d for a $16.5 million expansion an d renovation p roject for th e A rchibald S. A lexander Library, th e oldest, larg est, a n d m o st heavily u s e d lib rary in th e university’s system. T he 18-m onth p ro ject will in­ volve construction o f a four-story addition to th e right front side o f th e library. T h e additional 63,000 square feet o f space will b e used for increased seating a n d study space, storage room for collec­ tions, reserve read in g room s, an d staff an d public service functions. T h e p ro ject also includes renova­ tion o f 22,000 square feet o f existing space in th e library, as well as m ajor d e fe rre d m aintenance item s. “Students in particular will ben efit from th e in creased space a n d m o re efficient organization o f collections an d services,” said Joanne E u ster, vice- p re sid en t for university libraries a t R utgers. T h e two m en had fo rm ed a lasting friendship 30 years ago. • T he U n i v e r s it y o f A k r o n has acquired the Sylvia Sm ith Archives o f Sm ith Publications and Sonic A rt Editions. Sm ith Publications concen­ trates on publishing m usic o f living A m erican com ­ posers. T h e archives include 275 published scores, m ore th an 100 original m anuscripts from th e 1930s to th e presen t, historically valuable correspondence b etw een com posers an d publisher, and photographs o f com posers an d musical events. • T h e U n i v e r s it y o f T u ls a acq uired a collec­ tion o f m ore th an 30 letters an d d ocum ents relat­ ing to ranching operations in th e C h ero k ee Strip du rin g th e 1880s a n d 1890s. T h e C h ero k ee Nation earned profits from th e leasing o f th e land—bounded on th e n o rth by th e O klahom a-Kansas state line an d stretching from ju st w est o f T ulsa to th e begin­ n in g o f th e O k lah o m a p a n h a n d le — to c a ttle ­ m en w ho bro u g h t th e ir cattle up th e C hisholm and Texas trails.
