P E O P L E . Profiles Adele S. Dendy, former director of libraries at Ham pton University (see C&RL News, November 1986), has been nam ed director of libraries at Prai­ rie View A&M Univer­ sity , Texas, effective No­ vember 1, 1987. D endy received her bachelor’s degree in ele­ mentary education from T em ple U niversity (1963), an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh (1971), and a m a ster’s (1981) and d o c to ra te (1985) in higher educa­ tion administration from Indiana University. She has been an elementary Adele S. Dendy and high school librar­ ian, and served later as media librarian and head of the Media/Reserve Service at Indiana before becom­ ing head of the Education Library. A member of ACRL, Dendy has served on the Appointments and Nominations Committee and the Audiovisual Committee, as chair of the E duca­ tion and Behavioral Sciences Section (1985-1986), and on the EBSS Curriculum Committee and the EBSS Problems of Access and Control of E duca­ tional Materials Committee (as chair). She is also a member of the Reference and Adult Services Divi­ sion and the Library Inform ation Technology As­ sociation, and has served on the LITA Membership Committee. Dendy is a member of the ALA Black Caucus and has served on the ALA President’s Commission on Library Services to Minorities. Norma J. Hervey, associate professor and head of technical services at Gustavus Adolphus College since 1981, has been nam ed head lib ra ria n at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, effective in Sep­ tember. Hervey replaces Leigh Jordahl, who will return to teaching religion and classics. Formerly associate librarian at the University of Arkansas, Hervey became catalog librarian and later head of technical services at St. Bonaventure University. She was subsequently acquisitions li­ brarian at the University of Akron. Hervey holds an MLS from the State University of New York (1972) and a m aster’s degree in history from St. Bonaventure (1980), and is currently at work on a doctorate in history at the University of Minnesota. She is a member of ACRL and other professional organizations, and has received sev­ eral awards and grants. Ralph W. Holibaugh, associate university li­ brarian at Rice University, has been nam ed direc­ tor of libraries at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, effective July 1. Holibaugh received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he studied aeronautical engineering and psychology; a m aster’s in music history from Kent State Univer- April 1988 / 245 where he also pursued doctoral studies; and an MLS from the University of Illinois (1975). He has been at Rice since 1975. H a r r y H o s e l has been appointed assistant dean for public services at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. Hosel comes to UOP from the O ffice of the President of the Univer­ sity of California, where he served as administra­ tive analyst in library plans and policies. Prior to that he was head of general reference at the University of Missouri. Hosel has held other professional positions in the UC system and at Grinnell College. Harry HoselHe holds master’s de­ grees in library science and the history of religion, both from the Univer­ sity of Iowa, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Library and Information Studies at UC-Berkeley. His dissertation is entitled Faculty Status— The Relationship o f Role Stress and Job Satisfaction Among Academic Librarians. Je a n K i n d l e n has been named executive assis­ tant to the associate provost and director of univer­ sity libraries at the University of Pittsburgh, Penn­ sylvania. As executive assistant for external and developmental relations in the Pittsburgh Library System, Kindlen will assume responsibility for public affairs activities, including public relations, external publicity, continuing education, special events such as conferences and colloquia, develop­ ment and fund-raising projects, publications, and monitoring legislative and public policy activities which affect research libraries in higher education. Kindlen was formerly director of library and media services at Pitt’s School of Library and Me­ dia Services. She has also been head of serials and cataloger in the Falk Library of the Health Profes­ sions. A graduate of Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, Kindlen holds a master’s degree in education and an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh. Kindlen is past president of the Pennsylvania Li­ brary Association, and has also served as first and second vice-president and annual conference chairperson. She has also been active in local li­ brary organizations and has served on numerous professional and library-related committees. Sessions has also been a consul­ ant in library automation and has authored nu­ merous articles and presentations. Webster had served as interim direc­ tor since November 1 of last year. Webster received his MLS from the Univer­ sity of Michigan in 1964 and worked in a variety of libraries before join­ ing ARL in 1970 to es­ tablish the O ffice o f Management Studies. During his tenure, he Duane Webster has designed a number of programs to enhance and improve the manage­ ment and services of research libraries, including study processes to assess public services, manage­ ment systems, collections, and preservation activi­ ties; and developed a series of institutes on research libraries for library school faculty. Webster has consulted in nearly 100 libraries, provided man­ agement training to more than 5,000 libraries, and has written widely on the topic of organizational development and performance improvement for li­ braries. A n d e r s o n , senior descriptive cataloger in the English Language Section 1 of the Descrip­ tive Cataloging Section at the Library of Congress, retired December 31 of last year. He had worked more than 17 years in the Library and 27 years in federal service. Anderson was born in Ireland and raised in Massachusetts, and received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from George Washing­ ton University. He earned an MLS from the Catho­ lic University of America in 1970. Anderson began his federal service as a clerk-stenographer and sec­ retary with the Office of the Quartermaster Gen­ eral in 1952, and worked in private industry from 1957 to 1963. Returning to government service in 1964, he worked in the U.S. Geological Survey Li­ brary before joining the Library of Congress in 1970. All of his service has been in the Descriptive Cataloging Division, where he has held positions of increasing responsibility. P e t e r J. d e l a G a r z a , coordinator of the His­ panic Acquisitions Program at the Library of Con­ gress since 1978, retired March 1. De la Garza re­ ceived bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington and joined the Library in 1959 as a special intern before becoming head of acquisitions in the Columbus Memorial Library of the Organization of American States in 1960. He returned to the Library in 1968, serving succes­ sively in the Order and Overseas Operations Divi­ sions and as technical officer of the Processing Ser­ vices Department. A life member of ALA, de la Garza has been active for many years in the Semi­ nars on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and the Association of Caribbean Uni­ versity, Research and Institution Libraries. I r v i n g K a o , the first and only head of serials ac­ quisitions in the Graduate Library at the Univer­ sity of Michigan, Ann Arbor, retired in January. Kao began working at Michigan 30 years ago as a student assistant in the Dentistry Library. After earning his MLS, he became a cataloger and even­ tually serials acquisitions librarian in 1967, when the Serials Acquisitions unit was first established within the Serials Division. Kao helped catalog the then new Undergraduate Library in 1956 and from 1957 to 1967 was one of the key serial catalogers within the Cataloging Department. In 1971, he planned and supervised the decentralization of re­ ceipt of all journals and periodical publications. M a r i o n M c M a h o n , the first head of the Copy Cataloging Unit at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, retired in November 1987. Mc­ Mahon, a flight instructor during World War II, joined the library in 1972 as a cataloger and was in­ strumental in the establishment of the Copy Cata­ loging Unit. Je a n Pe c k , head of the Catalog Department at the University of California, Berkeley, retired De­ cember 31, 1987, after more than 21 years of ser­ vice. Before coming to Berkeley, Peck was a nurse for 14 years and later worked at Michigan State University (1961-1966), first as a science cataloger and then as head of the LC Section. She joined the Berkeley staff as a science cataloger and became head of the LC Cataloging Section the following year when the Catalog Department first imple­ mented copy cataloging. In 1971 Peck was ap­ pointed head of the Monographic Cataloging Divi­ sion, assuming responsibility for both original and copy cataloging and overseeing the implementa­ tion of batch cataloging and, later, online catalog­ ing using BALLOTS (later RLIN). She was ap­ pointed acting head of the Catalog Department in 1976 and became permanent head in 1977. Under her leadership, the library implemented AACR2 in 1981, closing its card catalogs and introducing fiche catalogs. An automated catalog maintenance and authority control system was likewise intro­ duced. Peck has also been instrumental in leading Berkeley’s contributions to the Name Authority Cooperative Project and in guiding UC participation April 1988 / 249 in the National Cooperative Cataloging proj­ ect. Throughout her career Peck has participated on numerous library and LAUC committees, as member and chair. She has been active in ALA and the California Library Association, serving as a member of the CLA Council during 1983-1986. Peck has also served on numerous statewide com ­ mittees and on the Research Libraries Group’s BIBTECH during its formative period. Deaths Jo h n A. B r e n n a n , curator of the Western His­ torical Collection and University Archives at the University of Colorado, Boulder, died January 21 at the age of 59. Brennan had been curator since 1964 and was largely responsible for the Collec­ tion’s growth and increasing importance. He at­ tended the University of Detroit and Michigan State University, from which he received a bache­ lor’s degree. After serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Brennan earned master’s and doctoral degrees in history from Boulder. He was the author of a book, Silver and the New Deal, published by the University of Nevada Press, as well as a number of monographs and articles, and edited some 15 guides to manu­ script collections. Brennan also served as reviewer or editor for the University of Oklahoma Press, So­ cial Science Journal, Western Historical Quar­ terly, and other publications. An officer of the So­ ciety of Colorado Archivists, he was also a member of the Colorado History Group, the Organization of American Historians and the Western History and Western Social Science Associations. M a r g a r e t S c h i n d l e r B r y a n t , retired former chief of the Division of Bibliography (1947-1961) at the National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Maryland, died December 1, 1987. Bryant had also been ch ief o f the R eference Section (1943-1947). She was known as a founder of the Bibliography o f Agriculture, which she managed from its inception in 1943 until her retirement. Bryant had been active in the League of Women Voters since leaving the Library. L e w i s C . C o f f i n , retired law librarian of the Li­ brary of Congress, died December 21, 1987, at 78. Coffin earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College and a law degree from George Washington University. Appointed to a position in the Library’s former Card Division in 1931, he remained in the Processing Department for 33 years, working suc­ cessively as assistant chief or chief of three divisions and as assistant and associate director of the De­ partment. From 1942 to 1946 Coffin served in the U.S. Navy. He was appointed law librarian and general counsel of the library in 1964, remaining in the latter position until 1970, when a separate O f­ fice of the General Counsel was created. He retired in 1971. Coffin was active in the District of Colum­ bia, American, and Federal bar associations, the American Association of Law Libraries, and the International Association of Law Libraries, of which he was elected president in 1968. T h e l m a E a t o n , retired professor of library sci­ ence at the University o f Illin ois, Urbana- Champaign, died in July 1987. Eaton taught cata­ loging and the history of books and printing in the School of Information and Library Science from 1949 until her retirement in 1964. E t h e l B . K e l l a r , retired librarian of the Schaf­ fner Library at Northwestern University, Evan­ ston, Illinois, died November 27, 1987, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the day before her 99th birthday. Kellar had been head of the Circulation Depart­ ment in the Schaffner Library before becoming as­ sistant librarian. Shortly thereafter she was named head librarian and remained so until her retire­ ment in 1955. PUBLICATIONS • Africans in the New World, 1493-1834, by Larissa V. Brown (62 pages, February 1988), is a guide to the exhibition at the John Carter Brown Library, Brown University, that commemorates the 350th anniversary of the first arrival of blacks in New England in 1638 and the centenary of the abo­ lition of slavery in Brazil in 1888. This exhibition catalog describes 81 items from the Library’s col­ lection. Copies may be obtained for $10 from the John Carter Brown Library, Box 1894, Provi­ dence, RI 02912. ISBN 0-916617-31-9. • Approval Plans, SPEC Kit #141 (124 pages, February 1988), contains the results of a June 1987 ARL survey that covered the points of continuity and consensus in approval plan use over the pre­ vious four years and the diversity of ways in which librarians assess these plans. The kit contains the tabulated survey results, two examples of questions
